As one of only two or three Hol members who bothered to attend, I can report that the visit itself was distinguished only by much of the usual nervous cuff tugging, tie straightening and innocent vowel strangulation - not by the natives - while Camilla seemed relieved at the total absence of protesting student types. As Claire & David determinedly inserted themselves into the curvy groove of hope, a Tottenham Hale councillor did his best, to no avail,  to interest the Duchess in an improving book.

In the immediate aftermath of what was inevitably described as a successful Royal Visit, a crack snatch squad from the Met's Diamond Coronet team picked up an elderly couple, 'both in their 60s', on the outskirts of Tottenham. It is understood they were being driven in a stolen limousine (property of the People). They are to appear at a midnight Camcourt on a variety of charges, stretching back over three decades. Sources close to the Camcourt suggest the charges relate to the prolonged undermining of the bedrock of society, the deliberate fraying of the fabric of marriage & the family, the slow moral demolition of all that made England great, the careless mislaying of society's moral compass, and the setting of inappropriate example in these matters to the Youth of Tottenham as representatives of the Nation. The Woman has been named as The Other Woman. The man is described as a Poor Jabbering Loon with ehh Pretensions to er Relevance. But, as one poster on Hol says, "we have to trust that, in the normal manner, the Camcourt will demand proof before finding a Royal Person guilty."  Nevertheless, we understand that their heads are on the block. The Duchess is said to be wearing her hair cropped short, while Charles is wearing a special offer of 3 Hawes & Curtis dress shirts @ £74.99.

All joking aside I happened to be there supporting someone affected by the riot. They were very informal,  pleasant and interested in what people had to say. It was a total surprise and everyone there - staff, volunteers, colleagues from the police and other agencies, seemed genuinely  pleased to see them. In true Tottenham style someone said 'hello, how are you, welcome to Tottenham'. People were very natural and really welcoming. And they did meet local people - not just local worthies or 'community leaders'.

And if the Prince's Trust is steering more money for young people inTottenham, that's great.

The Community Assistance Centre has provided a great service to people who have suffered as a result of the riot. Staff are working without breaks and not taking their days off; and I know of at least one ex-staff member made redundant who came back to volunteer. It shows the best of public service and Haringey has organised this really well. The Council doesn't often get praise, but it should for this.
