Changing council and/or Veolia policy on contaminated recycling
The council sets out a policy for when they see the wrong stuff in a green recycle bin:

Does anyone else agree that this could be improved?
It seems to me that it would be much better if the Veolia labelled the bin as they do, but collected the bin contents as they normally would trash.
As it stands, we end up with this:
It has now been left outside a house to which it does not belong -- I've used OurHaringey to report it.
Is there value in not collecting the rubbish? Surely the affixed tag is the useful information. Or is the attempt to be somehow 'punitive'? If so, I think this is only counter-productive.

Right. Sorted, I think. Some of my stuff was in plastic carrier bags so they couldn't see what was in it. As far as I can tell from your splendid list of 'gotchas' above, there were no offending items. There were some large, clear plastic storage boxes with lids though. They're all broken and completely plastic. No dodgy linings. Wonder if that was also putting them off... If you could advise, I'd be most grateful. Otherwise I'll leave them out, and see what happens next week. Using neighbour's compost bucket for now. Goodness knows what was wrong with mine, if anything.

The filled bags would be enough - I just have to remember to tip out the bag completely before I recycle it too.
The plastic storage boxes are iffy since they could be clear polystyrene which isn't recyclable. Best to stick to the "Plastic pots, tubs, trays, bags and bottles" plastics items they list in their Recycling A to Z - link here:

Ah, thanks. Clear polystyrene. That never crossed my mind and potters are materials people. (I am a potter.) God help non-nerdy types!

Another 'gotcha' I missed above is old/broken plastic plant pots - are often polystyrene.

Also in my own experience Gordon T is predictably helpful.
But, Claudia Clare, we have you still wondering: "... if that was also putting them off."
Once more an example of "a missing link". The lack of that bit of helpful friendly non-judgemental advice from a member of Haringey or Veolia staff. Which - in effect - thanks you - hopefully with a smile - for trying to do the right thing. But gently nudges you for not doing it quite right and shows or tells you how.
From time to time we've had people round from Haringey Pest Control. Thoughtful, sensitive, businesslike, with charm and some humour. It's not impossible. It can be done.
And it's as much a suggestion as a complaint. So don't hesitate if the problem continues. If you're unsure about contacting a councillor. There's an intelligent, thoughtful lateral-thinking senior manager who actually knows about problem-solving. Steve McDonnell Stephen.McDonnell@haringey.gov.uk

Many thanks for this informative video Gordon T. It may explain what's happening. Although it doesn't in any way shed light on the thinking behind what appears to be the randomness of the Council's and Veolia's response.
Here's a concrete suggestion for anyone in a position of power from these two bodies who happens to read this thread.
Not everyone will view the video. But many more people may see the panels on the sides of the waste vehicles.
Treat them as mobile screen boards. Remove the pointless stupid vanity-logo and replace it with a few of the large graphics shown in the video.
