Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A major celebration of the cultural contribution of the black community has been lined up to celebrate Black History Month in Haringey.

There will events for the whole community to celebrate the cultural aspects of the black community both in Haringey, the UK and across the world.

Among the highlights are:

* exhibitions by black artists at borough libraries and Bruce Castle Museum
* plays and film nights
* poetry readings
* talks by black authors
* arts, crafts, cuisine and music from black communities from around the world
* events specifically for children and families
* a series of talks, including one helping people interested in tracing their family tree

The month is officially launched at The Original Gallery, Hornsey Library, on Friday 2 October.

As part of the month, the library service is also looking for black war veterans or ex-service personnel who are willing to share their war and post conflict experiences.

The "Charmed Life" project will collect oral histories and experiences from veterans - both men and women - from the Second World War, Northern Ireland, Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflicts.

Young people involved with the project will interview the veterans which will lead to better understanding of the black community's contribution to British armed forces.

At the end of the project, the young people will produce a documentary and a booklet.
