Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A series of assaults and muggings on and around Parkland Walk has led to the Friends of Parkland Walk to advising caution when using the walk as a route home after dark.

Two men, one an off-duty police officer, were attacked and seriously injured on the walk in the early evening of November 30. On the same day, three women were mugged in two separate incidents on nearby streets. A fifty-year old man has been arrested in connection with the assault.

All three attacks took place around 6pm - a time when many people are returning home from work, but which in winter is already well after sunset.

The Friends of Parkland Walk advises commuters and local walkers to be vigilant and to turn off the walk if concerned.

Advice from the Metropolitan Police also notes that opportunistic theft increases in the run-up to Christmas, so stay alert, keep valuables out of sight and stick to well-lit areas if possible.

Without taking away from the extremely good advise here. I would add that the story, as reported in the Hornsey Journal, might leave readers with the sense that the Parkland Walk is a focus of assaults and a dangerous place to go. I think that impression needs some reconsideration.

Assaults in nearby streets have no specific relevant connection to the Parkland Walk per se. If the assaults had happened all within a short distance of a restaurant, would it suggest the restaurant was to be avoided?

The advise remains the same though. Poorly lit places are always going to attract unsavoury characters and common sense should prevail when out at night. If in doubt, stick to well lit streets or take public transport. I'm happy to see the police appear to have apprehended the assailant.

Very sensible, Simon. It's mad to go there in the dark if you ask me.

Also, Hornsey Journal should know that the Parkland Walk is a beautiful nature reserve and a precious place, not to be viewed as a shortcut with hazard thrown in.
