Well, having just had my washing machine breakdown - imagine my joy at discovering that someone has cut out not only the Catalytic converter but also the pipework either side from my car so that the whole lot has to be replaced. I have an old model Toyota Prius (gen 2) and the garage say there's been a spate of these thefts in the area recently.
I either have to claim the £2000 + cost of parts and labour on insurance (which would be silly because the excess plus higher premiums will end up costing me more) or I have to find an estimated £500 for the Cat C + the pipework(?) + the labour (est 200).
I know the theft occurred between Saturday and Tuesday evening. The car was parked directly outside my house and my bedroom overlooks it. I am not a heavy sleeper and can only remember one evening with loud music in the street.
So - I'm also reliably informed there is not much to prevent it being stolen again. All of which will inevitably lead to me selling my extremely reliable low mileage, low emission car which *has never broken down ever* ...(and I've driven it all over Europe and the uk)..unfortunately I don't use it much anymore and I certainly can't afford to be supporting scrap metal yards. Are these parts not monitored in any way? I have the strong sense I may end up buying back my own car's part!
I sincerely hope I'm the only one but fear maybe not. Do I tell safer neighbourhoods team? and how will that help I wonder. The mechanic's quote is 'once they're under your car they will steal it- there's nothing you can do' . Welding it in apparently only results in them taking even more of the pipework. I didn't even know this was a 'thing' yesterday.
sigh.

I heard about this on Twitter yesterday, reported on Crouch End side of the tracks. Both Prius. I can't see an obvious solution. Is it to supply Uber drivers clocking up large mileage? I also agree claiming on insurance likely to be counter productive.
apparently it's because the older model ones contain precious metals which are worth quite a bit. And it's an easy hit- 5mins is apparently all it takes.
I have reported it via online forms now. That will help with stats I guess but not much else.
Sorry this has happened to you. It’s disgraceful.
and bloody hell! What next!! Don’t steal the car.....steal the exhaust underneath it!!
It turns out the garage quotes weren't the cheapest option since I can buy a replica part UK made with the correct verifying papers for 200, and was quoted by another garage 70 for labour to fit it.
Also- although they insisted there is nothing you can do to protect yourself against this- via a HOL comment I found this: http://www.catsafe.org.uk/installation/index.html
Funny how quietly cutting it off is discounted by the thief as it's probably only a couple of minutes but putting one back on (essentially an exhaust pipe with a couple more bolts) is £200. Not to mention the £50 for "diagnosis" when the guy putting it on the back of the truck could have told you the vehicle had no exhaust.
