Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Can you help with the Fishmongers Arms cattle trough and drinking fountain?
A few years ago Haringey Council got a grant from Heritage England to restore the listed cattle trough on the corner just to the north of the Civic Centre.
Since then it has looked very sad – the trough full of dirty water with lots of litter floating in it. With the agreement of the conservation officer, we have now arranged for Haringey Parks Department to put earth in the trough so it can be planted. We tried to get the water fountain connected but that turned out to be too difficult.
The Fishmongers Arms building (No. 287 High Road) has recently been restored with nine flats. The forecourt area has been landscaped with gardens and walls.

Oh, what a shame! Pity it couldn't have been made a fully-functioning fountain as originally intended. As if that area isn't already overloaded with neglected weed-ridden plantings - whoever decided those hideous rusting circular metal "beds" in Crescent Gardens were a good idea, especially since there was obviously no budget nor intention to ever maintain them and deal with the overgrowth of thistles and bindweed, should have been sacked!
Introducing more soil that will quickly become overrun by nature is not the best way to preserve a fragile marble edifice, especially since it contains acids that will erode the structure.

There are a number of cattle troughs in Haringey but only three of them are listed. The Fishmongers Arms cattle trough was built in 1901 but unusually it does not face the road. Instead it was built to face an open market space in front of the public house.
