Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can anyone recommend a gp with a good understanding of mental health issues.

Hi,
Can anyone please recommend a GP near the Turnpike Lane end of the Ladder that's understanding with mental health conditions. In particular BPD, but also depression and anxiety disorders.
I'm currently with a surgery on Green Lanes near to Green Lanes but have been fearful every time I have to go there due to the persistent lack of understanding. After many years I've decided it's time for a new surgery. I'm not concerned about distance as long as I get to speak to a GP that for a start even knows what BPD is.
Appreciate people may be put off replying publicly if they too are sufferers so if you'd like to pm me instead, I'd be extremely grateful. I feel rather lost at present.

Dear Ladder Resident
Sorry you are feeling lost, must be a very lonely and scary place to be.
If you are looking for a new GP Practice,I would suggest checking beforehand if they have a GP who has a special interest in Mental Health. They may be a bit thin on the ground to be honest. If you are resident in the north end of the ladder you may fall within the geographical boundary of the Queenswood Medical Practice on Park rd in Crouch End. I see on their website that they have at least one GP with a special interest in Mental Health. I live on the North end of the ladder and registered there last year. I would say that they are a good GP Practice. I can't vouch for the understanding and effectiveness of managing patients Mental Health issues but I think they are worth a shot.
Can I further suggest that you google " Whittington Health IAPT " and here you will find information on how to access psychological therapies in Haringey. Counsellors,Cognitive Behavioural Therapists and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners are available to help people in the borough with issues such as anxiety, stress and mild to moderate depression. You can self refer and don't have to depend on a GP referral. I don't know if they can help with BPD but why not give them a ring, you have nothing to lose. I am sure if they are unable to help you they will be able to advise you on who can.
Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hello there, just wanted to let you know that I'm registered with Queenswood practice and I think they're brilliant. I know everyone's experiences can be different but I've had numerous appointments over time with them for a wide range of reasons and I've always felt like they actually care and have concern for my health and wellbeing.
Best of luck finding a surgery and GP that works for you. All the best, R

Message me and I will be happy to discuss the treatment program currently being undertaken locally for bpd by a family member.

Have messaged you me contact details on sunday

hi

I can't help with a GP, but St Ann's hospital may be a better place to seek help. If your current GP practice hasn't suggested this, then that is regrettable. I can't vouch for how good they are and my knowledge is 2nd hand, but they have some provision for BPD and it is probably where a GP with some awareness would want to refer you.

Here is a link to the relevant bit of St Ann's website..

Also this from the charity Rethink, which chums have worked for, may be useful, especially towards the end.

As Mags said, very brave of you to ask about help, be it for a loved one for yourself.

If you want a friend's partner works at St Ann's and I can ask them specific questions, if you wish to message me. Also, if in distress, I think it has an emergency unit.

My sister has worked as a mental health professional, so I know accessing help can be really difficult, but also there are ace professionals working out there..

I hope you can get the help you so richly deserve.

dear Ladder Resident, I wish you well in your search for a good GP who can understand your issues and needs. You can self-refer to the local IAPT services (another post suggests this here). It might take a few weeks to get into their system but once you're in they will offer the right treatment for your needs, for as long as you need it. Don't be deterred. Good luck- there is help out there,it's just knowing how to access it.

HI ladder Resident
I was diagnosed with BPD sometime ago, treated mostly at St Annes and after trying several rubbish surgeries, I have been with Dr Shier at the cedar practice, woodberry downs, just past manor house. She has always been very good with me. They also have mental health workers who come into the surgery there and work with people. They can also refer you onto St annes. so I would give them a try

I hope you get the help

Hello,

I can't recommend a GP (mine is okay, but I hope you'll find a better one) but I wanted to say how brave and sensible you are for tying to find a different GP. I hope you find someone.

Lisa

Have added you as a connection- very happy to share my experiences and local support knowledge with you :-)
