Taxicab safety info from the Met:

Text CAB to 60835* and they'll use GPS to text your two nearest minicab numbers and one taxi (black cab) number.

Book it

Book your minicab with a licensed minicab operator by phone, email or in a minicab office.

Check it’s yours

Make sure the driver can confirm your name and destination before you get in the car, and check the driver’s photo I.D.

Sit in the back

Always sit in the back seat, and carry your mobile phone in case of an emergency.

Don't risk taking an unbooked minicab

Always use a booked and licensed minicab, taxi, Night bus or the Tube to get home.

You can also use the Findaride service to get phone numbers for licensed minicab and private hire operators.

if you have a smartphone you can download a free app called Hailo. they tell you where the nearest black cab is, and if you book it show you a picture of the driver. They do not start the meter till you get in and I think they allow you some waiting time. You can register a credit card on line so that you don't need to carry extra cash for getting home late at night. There is no extra charge for using the service.
