Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Bye bye Banksy!
For a few days now I've suspected something was afoot with Turnpike Lane's Banksy; it's been surrounded by scaffolding and tarpaulin since Wednesday - and there was a security van present for much of that time.
This morning I had a sneaky look under said tarpaulin to find it had been removed. I spoke to the guy rendering the wall and he said that after repeated attempts to gouge it out, the owner of the Poundland building had decided to take steps to 'preserve' it. He wasn't sure where it's gone...one can only wonder if it's been sold. Sad to see it go - it was nice to have a landmark of sorts...

If someone could stencil a Banksy on the wool pulled over the 'Dear Leader's' eyes, couldn't we export the lot to Miami as 'Lost Leader' or even 'Loss Leader'?

OAE, can I please assure you that absolutely nobody I know has the slightest wish to see The Dear Leader deported to Miami. On the other hand, should Claire Kober, entirely voluntarily, indicate a desire to leave shortly for a prolonged sojourn in that wonderful city, I'm happy to chip-in for the taxi fare to Heathrow.
And there is - how could there not be? - a webpage with some useful tips on how to be a real Miamian. You'll notice that it includes: "Viewing art is not considered a sober activity". Which may offer a clue about those bids of $400,000 +

You said this before, Clive, and I'd no idea what you meant. So I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary: "Unseemly (adj and n.) Unbecoming, unfitting; indecent."
Which doesn't help me very much. I am not becoming anything except older. Nor can I recall any of my public comments about Cllr Kober which may be thought indecent.
As for unfitting, I believe that Speaking Truth to Power is not just fitting, it is my responsibility as an elected councillor and a citizen. There are far too many councillors currying favour with party "leaders". I'm not about to join in the fawning.
I do though, try hard to base what I say or write on accurate facts. So if something I've said or written about Cllr Kober is inaccurate or does not fairly represent what she has done or said, then I will correct it and make amends as best I can by publicly correcting and withdrawing my comment and apologising.
"Gentlemanly" - are you suggesting the faults of a councillor or council leader should be above criticism because of gender? To her credit, that's one card I've never seen Cllr Kober play.

Given our new found status as an art mecca is now firmly established, can we please have an arts centre in wood green?

There's been a Cultural Quarter in Wood Green for many years. Haven't you seen the signs? More money is about to be spent on another one at Tottenham Green.
Should local councils try to find money to support arts and media projects? Of course.
But by helping them to flourish. And not by colonising them and trying to corral them into some fake "quarter".

I have seen the signs, but never managed to find Le Quartier Culturel de Boisvert. Unless they mean the Chocolate Factory ?
Perhaps the signs themselves are pieces of ironic graphic symbolism evoking the futility of artistic ghettoism.

Many thanks, John. The penny has finally dropped.
But how embarrassing that all these years I failed to 'get' the symbolism and subtle humour of this sign.
Do you think that Banksy - or his crew - put up the sign as street art? If so should the Council sell it to Miami auctioneers? Or should we pay for 24/7 surveillance to prevent an art heist, protecting the borough's cultural heritage for the community? Or perhaps we could simply put the original in a bank vault and erect a holographic copy?

It's all all art, Eugene. Precious and important. Can't touch a speck of its paintwork. Except of course the building owners who, I assume, still have every right to clean graffiti off their wall. Meanwhile a note arrives at this website.
