Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Building a des res...for the Railway Fields mini beasts
On such a glorious Saturday as today, there was only place to be in Harringay this morning and that was joining the Friends of Railway Fields family wildlife activities.
Kids were invited to do drawings, go on treasure hunts looking for signs of Spring or make mini-beast homes out of twigs and leaves. My two enjoyed creating some palatial residences for beetles and bugs.
They also joined the teams of kids out with the clipboards, hunting down Spring treasures to tick off their list such as primroses, buds from the many and varied bushes and trees and, of course, woodlice.
While they roamed around, I was able to find a couple of treasures of my own
Of course, there was time to play in the revamped playground too.
Many thanks to Lizzy and the rest of the team for putting on the activities and opening up the nature reserve at the weekend to give people a chance to enjoy it.
Railways Fields is usually open on weekdays but having a weekend opening gives a lot more people a chance to visit and enjoy it.
Incidentally, you don't need to have kids or wish to indulge in anything more strenuous than soaking up the rays and admiring the daffs to go along to an activity Saturday, although, if you're feeling energetic, there was conservation work going on along the path up to the TCV hut.

Lovely write up and photos- thanks and great to meet you today, your kids did a fine construction job! Was lovely to see so many families enjoying the reserve. I am looking at this on my phone so I can't add links but later I will post the link to the Family Wildlife Arts Facebook page and Friends of Railway fields webpage. By the way to clarify the Friends group (Mary, Caroline, Keith to drop a few names) and TCV staff (eg conservationist Clif Osbourne) are the ones who make opening the reserve up on the last Saturday of each month possible. They carry out conservation work and have their monthly meeting. Silvia and I are volunteers (we met helping out with the school groups last Summer term) and both local residents who just love our neighbourhood reserve . We were asked by TCV and the Friends group to help organise family art activities on these Saturdays to help encourage families to use and fully appreciate Railway Fields. We get lots out of seeing families really engage with wildlife. Next months session is 29th March, hope to see lots of you neighbours there, Lizzy x

Thanks Liz and Lizzy - from the Friends' perspective it was great to see so many people enjoying the wildlife art and discovering more about nature at Railway Fields.
We're always keen for volunteers to help us with the monthly conservation work too, so do come along or get in touch at friendsofrailwayfields@gmail.com if you can spare an occasional couple of hours to help maintain this lovely local space.
