Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

12 05 08 Pemberton Road. Better Haringey binWarham Road. Monday Morning.

Published today, the latest Local Environment Quality Survey shows that streets around the country are still in an unsatisfactory condition.

Headline findings from the 2007-08 survey include:

*Smoking related litter remains by far the most prevalent item of litter on England's streets, found on 78 per cent of all sites surveyed.

*Confectionary packaging is again the second most common item. This year it fell slightly from 67 per cent to 64 per cent.

*Drinks related litter has risen: alcoholic drinks up by one per cent to 22 per cent, soft drinks litter up by five per cent to 57 per cent.

*Fast food, which has risen nearly every year since the survey began seven years ago, has risen again - this time by one per cent. Fast food was present on 25 per cent of sites surveyed.

*Dog fouling has fallen for the second successive year. It was evident on six per cent of sites surveyed. Dog fouling has now fallen by one per cent in each of the last two years

Overall litter has fallen by three per cent on last year.

This annual report surveys 19,000 sites across England looking at environmental problems like litter, fly-posting and graffiti.

It aims to give an objective and independent analysis of the cleanliness of our streets and neighbourhoods and identify key trends.

3%? Pitiful.
Are local authorities and government taking on board recommendations like these?

I do actually have to relate number plates as part of one of my jobs. But how I can do this, when I never SEE, as he is driving past at speed at 90 degrees to my bedroom window which is 20 ft away, normally at 3am in the morning?? There is no solution to that and no way I can make it out to the road in time, I know from trying.
I've started picking up plastic bags and crisp packets whenever I'm walking about in the area .... why not do the same? I put the rubbish in the nearest wheelie bin .... hoping the person doesn't mind...
I'm doing the same. When you think about it, there are SOOO many rubbish bins around for people to use...
Me too. You get incredulous looks though, and of course there are many things just too gross to touch.

There was a link here a while back making the point that if everyone picked up a bit of litter everyday you might evern run out of litter to pick up (perhaps not in Harringay!).
The way I overcame feeling silly when I get the odd looks when picking up litter is to think to myself "I care about where I live, don't you?". Haven't said it out loud yet, but maybe next time I will. It may just get people thinking before they go to drop their McDonalds, crisp packet, Subway wrapper in the street.
This is the link to the initiative Alison mentioned was featured on a similar thread a little while a go - "Pick up a piece everyday". Would make our planet a much healthier and prettier place if we did (and even lovelier if people didn't drop it in the first place!)

I pick up at least one piece every day and sometimes, if I have a carrier bag I clear my 'adopted' bit of the passage between Warham and Pemberton on the way back from the school
Litter pick

I don't give two hoots what people think, maybe if they see me 'on patrol' they'll think twice about dropping it on my patch. When I was a kid, it was considered normal to keep your bit of the street clean and rubbish free, now I see ladies on my road with immaculate front gardens, carefully sweeping the rubbish out of their front gardens and onto the street, firmly closing the gate behind them.
Re the sweeping ladies:

How wonderfully European.
Which means that only a very minor change / deflection of existing behaviour by the owners of the 'immaculate front gardens' could and would contribute to the 'common wealth' of cleaner streets for everyone.
