Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We've all seen them, lurking in their brightly coloured vests, wearing those fixed grins and carrying clipboards. The charity fundraiser is a fixture on many high streets but a charity watch dog has suggested that they should be boycotted.
The conclusion of the report by Intelligent Giving was
"never give to street fundraisers. Instead, find out which charity you really like, and give via its website."

Agree. I read that if you do a direct debit (which is what they want) to a highstreet chugger, you are not covered by the 14 days to cancel get out, as you are not at home.
Easy way to get around them is to say you don't believe in vivisection which rules out about a third of them, failing that have an imaginary telephone conversation on your mobile.

I knew a "chugger', they got twelve quid an hour, that's an awful lot taken away from your selected charity. It must be profitable I assume?
We have a friend who told us that she always says "I've just seen your friend" and points to one of the other chuggers (since they usually work in packs). This seems to work well and they leave you alone without questioning whether you have actually signed up to support their cause.
Twelve quid an hour ??? I used to get £8.00 an hour teaching English - and that was only "contact hours" ie breaks, staff meetings, etc were not paid.

Anyway the simple way to deal with them is walk past, say no thank you and DO NOT STOP.
Do chuggers add anything to the liveliness of the street? Or are they just an irritating nuisance? Or actually detrimental?
I'm not keen on the way they pounce on you and try and hold you talking even after you've made it clear you don't sign up for stuff on the street. I see them as no different as those annoying people who phone you up at odd hours to sell you kitchens.

Most people have a clear idea of the kind of charities they support and do their bit.

On the other hand, I miss the poppy sellers and the ladies in sensible shoes collecting for the guide dogs for the blind etc. Has the chugger replaced these volunteers? I was disturbed to read that the BNP were recently urging members to sign up as poppy sellers to fill the gap left by those ladies in sensible shoes. Maybe next year, I better get mine on. Last thing I want is a Nick Griffen supporter flogging me a poppy.

Anyway, I have no objection to people collecting on the street but those chuggers are a menace.
You're right about having a firm idea about the kinds of charities you want to give to. Amnesty, St Mungo's, Shelter, the Medical Foundation... that's my kind of stuff. Cancer, Red Cross, blindness etc, bugger off. I have to draw the line somewhere. This is perfect ammunition, along with NO EYE CONTACT!
Unfortunately Liz the BNP hijack all sorts of things to bully the electorate, it's the unofficial policy.
Two London councils are seeking to crackdown on the large numbers of chuggers that they say are impacting local businesses. Westminster and Wandsworth want to limit the hours they can work and force the workers to register with local authorities. More here
re all the above pussy-footing excuses to avoid chuggers, what's wrong with a good old-fashioned 'F--k off mate'?
