The W1 bus discussion.
The thought behind it was to run buses down Wightman to slow up traffic.
Actually, I don't think the only thought is for it to be a traffic calming device.

I think the main reason is to carry passengers to desirable destinations like to shops and stations.
If you look at the proposed route, there aren't many shops on it (Tollington, Wightman etc) Waitrose and Morrisons are served by 141 and 29 already. It doesn't go near any tube stations. I seriously doubt that the service will pay for itself.
Thanks for that, Liz. No more than John McM, I don't want to go on taking over this cycle thread with W1 Bus talk. BUT a slightly facetious comment of mine a couple of months back (along the lines that a Wightman bus would be the best traffic calmer) and one or two similar contributions from others may have given the impression that that was our only reason for a bus. NONSENSE! The reasons for a W1 Bus are many, and none of them are blind to the counter arguments. Among my 161 Wightman Road reasons so far are, fairly typically, Mr & Mrs Fox who were assured they would have a bus the year after they moved in. They've been waiting only 52 years for it.
I should be continuing with the petition on the northern end this morning, but my left knee counsels NO. I might get as far as the Mosque, but I'm not sure I'd get back without inflicting damage. Pity we haven't a bus.

No, Tom. We don't want a bus to mess up cyclists or to calm anything other than our future bus users. Equally, I'm for a combined W1 Bus + 20mph Zone extension. Have been for years. Arriva personnel agree this is possible and not unknown. We would need to convince TfL.
With the odd exception, everyone commuting into central London has already paid for a travel card. It's unlikely they'd pay to use a bike, when they can continue to use buses and tubes all day at no extra cost.
According to the London Cycling Campaign newsletter, these reports (above) about the Velib scheme running into problems were allegedly overstated, as part of the bargaining process between the company running the scheme and the Paris authorities!
What do you think of this one day 'free wheel event' which a lot of this £111m will be spent on? I'm sure its a nice day out for all the family and those new to cycling in London etc, but I honestly think in the long run its a waste of this nice amount of money. I'd rather money was spent on making cycling safe in London for everyone, everyday of the year for years to come, not once a year without any improvements for the future. The bike hiring scheme is nice in theory, only for Westminster I assume? to impress the tourists? It would be handy if your bike breaks down or gets stolen but would it be safe for a tourist or a non cyclist to use in the most congested city in the world? I've been hearing about huge amounts of money to be given to London boroughs for improving cycling for years and years I have yet to see any evidence of it.
