Big Sainsburys planned for Church Street Stokey
Two days left to comment on the new planning application submitted in February. Comments can be made up to Friday 15th March.
In the middle of June 2011 it was announced that a development is being planned for Wilmer Place, just beside Abney Park Cemetery on the corner of Church Street and the High Street – right in the heart of Stoke Newington. After public outcry about the proposal the developers revised their plans and held a second public exhibition on Tuesday 29th May and submitted a planning application after that. A further planning application was submitted in February 2013.

I know this is not directly Harringay or even Haringey but it's just over the border and loads of us go to Stokey to shop and eat on the great circuit of places in a 2-mile radius.
Remember that planning comments have to refer to specific planning issues, ie looking at the bulk and design quality, not just that this is yet another example of mighty businesses and developers trampling over the small and local.

The awful thing is, when I hear of big supermarkets opening elsewhere, I always find myself hoping it means fewer people driving up Green Lanes to 'our' Sainsbury's.

there's at least four full size supermarkets and countless 'local' ones within reach of this plan, between church st and manor house.
One would hope that these days 'they' would not build an Arena type plot without sorting out the road access. Whoever was responsible for the Arena half-plan should never have worked again. To those familiar with the junction of church street and the A10/stokey high rd, just picture the scene with 1000 extra cars an hour trying to go in + out...

Why does anyone in this area ever go to a supermarket for fruit and veg, when there are the excellent shops along the Green Lanes or even Tottenham High Road and West Green Road? Genuinely interested...

Agreed - I don't think this area is massively well served, although there is the Sainsbury's supermarket on Stamford Hill. I still use the bigger one on Green Lanes because it's better stocked, has better prices (I think, seems to be cheaper at least in terms of deals) and there is nothing of a similar size in the area.
I do shop hyperlocally as well - we have an AMAZING little supermarket on Seven Sisters Road (Gurbet's) but like you say, who has time to do that every day?

(Supermarkets are the last place one expects to find seasonal british food. Though I'm still puzzled about this british comment. Most of the veg in the local grocery stores is british sourced, 'cept those things that just aren't grown here plus, generally, the garlic. Only large supermarkets do daft things like air-freighting green beans.)

Tescos N15, Morrisons, Sainsburys at Stamford Hill, Asda ? at Stamford Hill. Plus several 'local' tescos etc.
If you avoid the Arena because of the traffic, imagine the traffic at that junction of Church St., that anyone driving north-south or vice versa has to cross.

Me neither re. that Tesco, I would never shop there. Depressing too!
I actually went into that ASDA in Stamford Hill recently because I'd been given a gift voucher and thought I might as well spend it on the weekly shop. Can quite honestly say I wouldn't go back if I was paid...five minutes in there was like a daytrip to hell! Experience is a huge part of what makes a decent supermarket.
