Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Guardian ran an article today about Independent booksellers advertising their tax returns in dig at Amazon's alleged use of tax havens.

I asked Tim West at the Big Green Bookshop for his reaction.

"We do pay our taxes and I think Amazon should pay their taxes too!" Beyond that, however, as you might expect the BGB's reaction was measured. Tim explained, "We don't tend to get involved in these coalitions where independent bookshops get together. Independent bookshops are supposed to be independent. Once they start acting together in this way, we question what it does to their independence".

I look forward to continuing my conversation with both Simon and Tim when I join then for the  Gavin Esler in Conversationevent soon (some tickets still available).

Have you noticed its all the large American companies that avoid paying tax like Amazon, Starbucks, Ebay. The small Independent business pay the taxes they have no choice.

Not just American corporations, also household names in Britain. Boots chemist paid about 3% tax last year - they are registered in Switzerland. It's incredibly hard to find out who plays fair and who's ripping us off.

What about supermarket chains - does anyone know their tax situation?
