Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was just cleaning the front garden when someone asked me, in an Eastern European accent, if I had any scrap metal. I didn't but because our front garden gate was stolen this weekend I was curious about this person so I followed him with my eyes and saw him go into the neighbour's (from two doors down) front garden and take something.

I then asked him why he went into people's gardens and he said because things in the front garden are always rubbish and he's allowed to take it. Our hand trolley was stolen in January, when we put it in the front garden, unaware of all those burglaries here, but it was certainly not rubbish. I tried to explain to him that what he's doing isn't ok, but he simply told me to f off.

I threathened to call the police so he went to put back what he'd taken, whilst calling someone.

I called the police meanwhile and saw the guy, and another who was on the opposite side of Allison Road, get into a white Eurocar van. They didn't drive past me but instead reversed onto Green Lanes to avoid me giving their licence plate number to the police.

So I think what happens every morning is that these two guys are looking for things in people's garden and a man in a white van drives them around the area.

The police contacted me twice, saying they're on the lookout, so hopefully something will come out of it.

Just beware people, look out for this white van and please report it to the police.  This really pisses me off cause within 2,5 months of living on the ladder our front garden gate, hand trolley and vacuum cleaner, which my husband was busy repairing, were all stolen. He just left the vacuum cleaner outside to get something inside and it was stolen within a matter of minutes.

Gives me the creeps that I'm inside and there's someone on my property!

Hello,

I live on Allison Road so will be sure to keep a look out for these people.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Hi Everybody

About 1.5 month ago during night scrap collectors stole the copper gas pipe which have to run outside of the building. As I started living in our current place I was completely unaware that the pipe is running on the wall. This thieves cut the pipe off during night and only lack of hot water in the morning told us that something was wrong.

Ironically, these thieves were quite careful and civilized as they closed the gas tap before their main job.

"Wherever you are thank you very much for not causing more dangerous damages to our building and gas bill."

Please look after your copper gas pipes especially if they run on the front wall of the building

Pictures of them and the van registration would be great so the police can pull them as this may not be the only aspect of criminality that the van is being used for. Whatever is it -sounds quite lucrative to afford a rental van.

I can't say that I have ever had anything taken from inside my front gate gate but I must admit to sometimes relying on itinerant scrap collectors.  When I have an old radiator to dispose of, I put it on the pavement leaning againt my wall and it will be gone within the hour.  There is an upside to this.  It saves me a trip to the dump, it saves Haringey sending out a collection truck and it gives the scrap collector something he wants.  I doubt if all scrap collectors are bent.  Remember when they were called rag and bone men?

I agree about the rag-and-bone carts. But it's also worth being cautious with your genuine attempts at "informal" recycling. If people take stuff from outside your home they may cherry-pick from what you leave. And some of it could turn-up in the next street. A couple of years ago, one resident told me about filling a "charity bag". Later she saw her underwear in a pile on the pavement.

Dumping for Charity?

And should metal recyclers later find they can't get what they thought for your scrap, they may not be fussy about how they re-dispose of it. I've seen railway embankments strewn with bits of cast-off metal.

At least the rag and bone man used to announce his presence as he made his way down the street: "Rag and bo-woah-woah-woahnnnn!" was a familiar refrain, and apart from sending the dog into a complete frenzy, appears to be a pretty inoffensive way to collect unwanted scrap.

A world of difference from individuals skulking in front gardens, hoking through your bins, and treating anything in that private area as 'fair game'.

I have a family of Eastern Europeans living next door to me, there garden is always fill with metal 6am in the morning they are banging away! they have a white van.

It make me sick to think the can get away with whatever they want!!!!

You don't to have put up with this, Cynthia. I suggest you contact the Noise Nuisance Team. Here's the link.

There may be other avenues for action as well. For example, Enforcement can take action on the piled-up metal waste. It's sometimes possible to bring pressure to bear through a landlord or managing agent. And of course councillors may sometimes be helpful. Here's the Haringey webpage where you can enter your postcode and get the names and contact details of your three ward councillors.

Please let people on HoL know how you get on.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

I had a similar problem with a family who lived next door to me.  I called the councils housing department and discovered that they rented the property as temporary housing. as a result the tenants were in breach of their tenancy agreement within a week it was cleared and remained in a fit state thereafter.

Cynthia if you can try to get filmed or photographed evidence and don't forget to date it.

I have told the councils so many times, they said i should try speaking to the landlord as they are privately renting. I have taken pictures of the garden, they even had bags and bags of cloths aids fill of clothing in the garden, bikes and wires. People are always coming and going picking up the stuff they have. I have lived here for 19 years and just want to move now.

can someone let me know who to email with car number plates?

had a run-in with a bloke going through my rubbish the other day and noted down his reg plate.

Hi, thanks i have called them so many times, they said its hard for them as they dont understand much English, i have now started to take pictures and record them. Hope i not braking the law by doing this!
