Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

After a a burglary 18 months ago when my computer was stolen along with other stuff, I thanked my lucky stars for Apple's Time Machine and for the fact the the burglars kindly left my external backup drive untouched. Having been so close to disaster, I redoubled my efforts to minimise the chances of my ever have to deal with complete data loss. In addition to making extra local back-up provision, I got more serious about my cloud back-up protocols. In doing so I tried a few cloud back-up services and most seemed cumbersome or expensive. Then I found Backblaze.

I'm very pleased with Backblaze. It's inexpensive ($50 p.a), unlimited, simple and works very efficiently. I'm also very impressed with the customer service response - every time I've asked a question they've come back with a clear, understandable and appropriate response and a solution that resolves my issue. (This time round, it's thanks to Christopher who even responded to my thank you note with additional info!).

For me cloud back-up is belt and braces. After our burglary Time Machine allowed me to go and buy a new computer the next day and be exactly where I was before the burglary. You can't beat that. BUT, if they'd stolen that drive or if we'd had a fire, Backblaze would at least preserve all my files. Fifty bucks a year is well worth that peace of mind for me.

Good service is worth every penny! For those who want free stuff (no support!), here is a bit of a list of free services:

Anyone with a free google account (gmail users etc) gets 15GB of storage for free, and there's a free sync utility (Google Drive) that will keep any folders on your device nicely synchronised in the background.

http://www.adrive.com and https://mega.co.nz give 50GB for free and have premium plans for more.

Flickr.com gives you a free terabyte for photos and videos

Hi Hugh,

I've just had a look at this, always being on the lookout for good backup options. However, it's no good for me (and many others) unfortunately, as all my stuff at home is saved on a NAS (network attached storage). Backblaze don't support NAS drives, only allowing backups from drives local to a computer plus plugged in USB drives.

Oh well, thanks for the recommendation anyway!

Hi Hugh

Thanks for the post. Being unfamiliar with it, I can't disagree about Backblaze but I'd have thought that a local hard drive/computer problem might be a greater risk than fire or burglary (?).

I too would endorse TIme Machine.

Like the saying that the best camera in the world is the one you have with you, the best backup is the one that you have and use.

Time Machine is powerful, automatic and unbelievably easy to set up. When you need to restore a file/files or a whole drive, due to the interface it's almost fun. IMO, any owner of a Mac without back-up in place should get an external drive, plug it in and just switch on Time Machine.
