Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A schoolgirl in Scotland has been taken to task by her head for taking photos of her school dinners then rating and blogging them.

The seemingly humdrum affair tuned into a PR disaster for Argyll and Bute Council after they banned the nine year old's blog.

The Never Seconds blog had been used by Martha Payne to raise money for the charity ‘Mary’s Meals’ and was attracting a huge attention.

The decision, which was taken by the council and not the school, has sparked a huge online backlash. Celebrity Chef Jame Oliver, who has long highlighted the issue of poor school dinners, weighed in and tweeted his support for Martha.

Looking through Martha's blog made me wonder what the quality of school dinners was like in Haringey. Any good? Do any Harringay kids take photos of their meals?

She's been unbanned and is allowed to take photos again.

Have you had a look at her blog? Some of the meals are frankly disgusting! Please tell me children in Haringey don't get food like this.

This is a biggy for me!  The school dinners were horrendous and the breakfast club food! My children complained that they had to have them as I was not well enough to prepare regular packed lunches and it was soul destroying. I did try and send them in with an extra flask of home made soup when I could manage but the school were not really happy about this as it had to be one or the other, packed lunch or meal, they did not make it easy. Cheap cheap products, white or crap brown not even cheap wholemeal bread. Fatty gristly meat.... overcooked veg, flavourless salad and fruit....

In secondary school I brought the food available to light and spoke to the canteen manager whose answer to lack of creative vegetarian and salad additions was that they serve spring rolls! I mentioned that these were full of fat and overcooked veg and her answer was we dont deep fry them, we heat them up in the oven.... duuuurgh!

My daughter was fortunate to go on an exchange trip to a school in Finland and came home raving on the food served there.... they serve home baked rolls mum, all types with seeds and wholemeal ..... and I could go back for seconds and thirds and fourths...  and they served the most delicious home made soup mum... all the food was delicious... why can't they do it in my school!

Finland I believe has free school meals for all children they rightly consider it the cornerstone for the health of their future generation.  I believe they have a heavier taxing but the quality of the schooling and the school meals in itself is worth it in my book.... We are what we eat and what we learn.

My daughter was raving on how they have a small break after every lesson as they need to rest their brains.... like this is not rocket science or not proven scientifically..... It is beyond me why schools still school  the way they do.

It has been proven that teenagers brains do not kick into power until 10ish at the earliest and they need extra sleep, yet we force them through their hormonal body growing stresses into school for 8.30am and straight into study, no gentle exercise, perhaps meditation, give them a taste of how they can develop a healthy happy future and get into good habits ... aaaaaarhhhhhhhhh!  Phew! Thats better, better out than in! Time for some breath awareness and mindfulness myself methinks:)

Not sure I am fully qualified to comment as my little one starts school in September, but the sample school dinner we had at the Chestnuts open evening was scumptious, and heathly. A world away from they served up when I went to school in Northumberland in the 80s! As for Martha, I think the school should feel proud to have such a clever, imaginative and enterprising student! Maintaining a blog aged 9! I hope the humdrum hasn't dampened her spirit!

The food at St John Vianney is also very good. No complaints here.
