Banned books at Hornsey and Wood Green libraries

Hornsey and Wood Green Libraries will host a Banned Books exhibition throughout November and December.

The event features some of the most notorious books in history, as well as surprising titles banned somewhere, at sometime and all available to borrow free.

Amongst the more surprising books to be the subject of a ban include Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, which was banned and burned in many US states for promoting witchcraft, and also banned in some schools in the UK.

The classic children’s novel, Black Beauty, one of the best-selling popular books of all time, was banned by the South African government during the Apartheid era.

Also on the list are more obvious titles, including Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence, which was the subject of a court case in the UK during the early 1960s.

While grown ups digest the banned books, children can enter a competition to win prizes of two tickets to see the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s, Matilda, in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

To enter children read four books of their choice and will be entered into a borough-wide prize draw. The first prize is a family ticket, with the runner up receiving two full-price tickets.
