Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

On my cycle home last night I was almost run over by a bus (a private hire vehicle). At the next set of lights I politely aksed him to take more care, he then threatened to run me over. Is this appropriate behaviour for someone driver such a large vehicle?

After numerous such incidents I now wear a helmet cam - so I have a video of the event here: Should I report this or would it be a waste of time? As far as I can see he's done nothing "wrong" as the traffic rules state that he should give a cyclist as much room as he would a car when overtaking, and if he'd only give a car 20-30cm then he's not broken this rule. Unless the threat of running me over is against the law?

You should definitely report this (and include the link) on www.stop-smidsy.org.uk. The information will also be sent through to the Metropolitan Police, who might decide to take action against this driver using your evidence.
Adam can you please clarify that we ARE supposed to take up that position in the lane?
Info from Cycle Training UK - one of the longest established and most reputable training organisations, and holding the cycling training contract for Haringey:

http://www.cycletraining.co.uk/about_us/our_principles.php#assertive

"Assertive road positioning and behaviour are the key to safe cycling. We teach people to use as much road space as they need to travel safely and effectively. We do not believe that cycle lanes are a requirement for safe cycling."
Have you see this blog? It was featured in the papers this week. Ha ha ha.
This is cool. I particularly like the magic of the iphone camera.
I just saw this, and then your second video. You're the kind of cyclist that really annoys me and happy to get out of your way when you're overtaking me perilously when I'm cycling also.

Look at your video again- Bus near miss - amazed you felt the need to post it - what were you trying to prove?

... so you were at the junction, started moving when the lights were STILL RED, narrowly missing a pedestrian who was still crossing, then shocked to nearly kill yourself from a BIG RED BUS. Yes it must have been an amber gambler, but you couldn't see it?

Bus near miss does nothing to promote cycling.

My advice, take a chill pill before you set off cycling and save yourself from having a nasty accident.
No excuse for him threatening you.. but did you check to the right and behind before overtaking the other cyclist ?
When I took my driving test (1968) there was a dpcument called the Highway Code. Does this stil exist?
it does, and I do believe it still applies to everyone on the road. Even cyclists.
Have had a look at this, and Adrian, if you were in a car here, you would have been at fault had there been an accident. You were overtaking, and not indicating to traffic around you that you intended to do so, nor did you check what was behind you to see if it was safe to overtake.
When you cycle on the road the rules apply to you too. So as far as I can see, the bus driver did nothing wrong. Saying he'd run you over was possibly going a little too far though.
However, I can see how he got annoyed at someone not looking and then accusing him of doing something wrong....
He stayed in the lane. The bus driver deliberately got close to him, they get a kick out of it.
