Awful traffic on Wightman Road
This from the local press reporting Councillor Askey in a debate about adopting and making up Wightman Road:
"Wightman-road was not in a state to be taken over. It was a main thoroughfare from which roads branched off, and was not much built upon. Heavy traffic was going on in the road. That morning in the course of half-an-hour he saw a dozen carts laden with clay and refuse passing through it. Such traffic would go on for a long time."

A dozen carts in half an hour! Dizzying! As to such traffic going on for a long time, I imagine most of us wish it had gone on a lot longer. 24 carts an hour? Luxury!

What a splendid find Hugh. Naturally, I disagree completely with the reporter's description of Wightman Road as being a main thoroughfare. It was not designed or built for dense traffic. Our problems are caused by it being used for that purpose despite its obvious unsuitability. Haringey's ongoing sin is maintaining its inappropriate classification as a B road. Withdrawing this classification would be a clear indication that the interests of residents are not subordinate to passers through.
