Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
At it again...neighbours rubbish
It's happening again, neighbours who have filled their bins are using mine as their overflow. This is just not fair. Where am I supposed to put my rubbish when they've finished filling my bin? Dump it in binbags that Veolia won't take?
I really think that the council and Veolia should be able to help me on this one as I'm the victim here. Instead they both wash their hands of it and say it's my problem. I could, and probably will have to, approach these neighbours (again) and have a word with them about it. But that's going to cause some animosity and strained relations and to tell you the truth I'm getting really fed up with it all. I shouldn't be in this situation. Lets face it, the new rules (including no binbags collected and no bags moved to get to the bins to empty them) are what's causing all this. Did they really think this through? Didn't they ever consider that this would happen?
BTW, this is a different neighbour than last time. This one has been told more than once about using my bin.

I mentioned a similar problem to Cllr David Schmitz who sent me the following mail-
As promised, I've asked the "village manger" for Veolia to have a word with your neighbours about recycling and show them the ropes.If your local councillors are as concerned and pro-active as David, perhaps they could do the same ?

That's not the point here. It makes no difference if it's me, Veolia, the council or councillors who do the telling/advising, they'll still do it. The more I complain the more animosity will develop between us (the neighbours) which is already happening to some extent. So far I've counted 5 different neighbours who have at some time used my bin be it for just a carrier bag or a full bin bag. ( I have 2 neighbours (one house) to the left, ditto to the right and one upstairs. They are or have all used my bin.
I actually have the smallest bin that Veolia supplied and I still never manage to fill it even in the two weeks. But this shouldn't mean that anyone else can use that space which would soon fill and leave no room for my own lesser amounts of rubbish.

Get Veolia to take away your bin and put your rubbish in your neighbours' bins ?

I was already thinking of putting some sort of lock on it. (what is the world coming to when you have to lock your dustbin.) but I personally think that Veolia or the council should supply me with one. After all, it's their new rules that are causing this problem for me.

This happens to me too, every week! And what galls me is that I have the smaller bins because I hate the large bins that block the front doors.

Madeline, you may decide the best route is to talk to the neighbours yourself.
But whether or not you do this, simply posting on this website by itself doesn't tell Veolia, Haringey Waste Management staff, or your ward councillors that the same problem is persisting. And if they don't know they can't try to help.
(In similar situations, I've found that people share the same landlord or management company. They may be able to suggest a solution.)

Just been onto Veolia and the council. Veolia say it's not their problem. The council sound as if they're not bothered either. They've said "It would be difficult to monitor". And what would they do even if they did find a guilty dumper? Not a lot I don't think. Having a word and/or sending letters has been proven to have little or no effect.

Did you use email, Madeline? I suggest that having got little or no response so far, it needs an email record to confirm your complaints and the various responses. Otherwise it can easily become a disputed 'he-said-she-said'.
I know from my own ward and from postings on this site, that the problem you have isn't unusual.
Which doesn't mean every problem is easy to solve. Almost certainly there won't be a solution which pleases everyone. But some solution can be found.
You've previously approached your own ward councillors and now Cllr Karen Alexander has offered to take this up on your behalf. I strongly suggest you follow up these offers of help.

usual caveat that You Should Not Have To Do Any Of These Things
but could you tell your neighbours the council is going to fine them if they don't stop doing this? It may not be what is actually happening (although it should be, IMHO) but perhaps it will scare them into stopping?
