Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We are new to the area and planning on buying a house in Bruce Grove. I'd love to speak to / meet anyone who lives in the area. We will be moving in with two sons who will be commuting to APS on the bus.

What's it like and what are your experiences?

That's most encouraging. How old are your children? (Hope you don't mind me asking) Ours are 11 and 12.

Hi Jennifer, you could also ask your question on the local online community forum Tottenham Life

Actually, it was me Russell. I'll have a look. Didn't look like it had much activity there though.

Not walking round the streets on their own yet then. I guess my concern would be of groups of intimidatory young people at large. Obviously the place has it's history, but I'm getting the impression that it has changed somewhat. Am I right?

We are engaged in buying on St Margaret's Road, all being well.

Hi russell, I was just wondering whether your move went through and if so how you are finding St Margaret's Road and Bruce Grove. My husband and I are considering the area but don't know anything about it so your hep would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Allie

Hi Allie. So far largely very happy.

House is great, have had it extended into the roof. Have met quite a few neighbours and they have been friendly. Sons are coping with commuting fine. I sometimes drive them over to APS (when there are musical instruments to carry) but that's fine. Have also met quite a crowd of local dog walkers, and I can pretty much guarantee to meet someone I know whenever I got out. Son no 1 has bumped into a couple of footpads, but I think this is not unique to the area.

Local shops cover most needs and are good value and friendly.

Parks are great too, I will be doing a volunteer shift at the Ecohub in Lordship Rec from 11-2 on Thursdays so if you are about come on by for a chat.

I'd be happy to show you around anytime anyway. Drop me a line and come on by.

Verdict is, we think it's great and would recommend it.

Hi Jennifer and Russell
I am an active member of Bruce Grove Residents Network - residents who get together and network to keep the community spirit alive and improve things in our area. See us on
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bruce-Grove-Residents-Network/188632...

Tottenham includes BG and has great history but it is one of the best places I lived in London (Clapham to Brixton to Brockley to Highbury to a house and garden just north of Philip Lane... in my 20 years here!). The place is very diverse, well connected, has loads of green space but has suffered from neglect over time. Over the last few years, but especially since the 2011 Riots, there has been a lot of talk of "regeneration" and this has caused much debate in the community of communities that make up the area.
There is loads going on and things are improving. You can check Haringey Council site for various plans to change various aspects of the urban environment
http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/housing_and_planning/rebuildingtot...

But that does't tell the full picture. Some aspects are controversial and local people clearly want their opinions to be heard and taken into account.
The transport situation should also get better for BG and North Tottenham when the rail services pass to TFL Overground from 2015.

I do not have kids so can't talk about that aspect. All I can say is that I can't see any difference between where I live now and Brixton and Brockley when I lived there and those areas are now considered "desirable"! My neighbours are brilliant!

So it all depends on why you are moving here and what you are after.
PM if you want more.

That all sounds good JJ. We'll be sure to join the Residents Network. It's great that there are people focussed on pulling a community together.

Will see you around.

Russell
