Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As I have mentioned in another thread, my son is starting at North Harringay in September.

He currently goes to nursery and his friends there are dispersing to a variety of schools in the area and his other close friends live in other parts of the borough or are younger.

So at present we don't know anyone else whose child is starting there this year.

I was just wondering if anyone:

a) has experience of their child starting school without knowing anyone, and how you coped with it and settled them

and

b) is in the same position with NH this year - and if they might be interested in meeting for a chat with the kids so that they might have a familiar face or two when they start?

Hey Robin

My son will be going to School in September and will probably not know anyone.

Myself and my wife see it as an essential part of growing up and the process of making new friends will no doubt equip him with the skills to get on in life.

Good luck.

North Harringey?

And yes, that's how we're going to approach it too.

South.

Good call.

My son was lucky and started school (Chestnuts) with a lot of his nursery friends, however he soon settled in and made friends with the other children who didn't go to his nursery. I think reception is very much like nursery, especially at the beginning, so if your child has nursery experience they tend to settle quite well into school.

I would say it's a great idea to try to meet some children and parents also going to NH in Sept and get them to play together over the summer. You'll meet other parents during drop off or pick up (if you are able to do that), and the PSA is a good way to meet other parents and to get involved in the school.

Starting school is a big step, in my experience the children settle in fairly well and it's the parents who need the support! I found it difficult when my son started school, and my daughter is starting in Sept which doesn't seem so far away at all.

Good luck, and I hope you get some replies from other NH parents.

My boy, now in Year 1, started nursery at North Harringay without knowing anyone other children in his year - although the school was familar as his older sister was there already. He was really fine - he quickly made firm friends with two other boys, total strangers when he started, and one of them is still his best mate now (the other went into the other class at reception stage). He may have been lucky, but thought you might like to hear a story where it worked out.

Happy to tell you more about the school if things you want to ask...

the other went into the other class at reception stage - I personally hate the way they break up kids' friendships in this way, it's not accidental.

This is my next challenge, making sure my daughter gets into a class with her friends from nursery. I've already mentioned it to school and they say it's all to do with demographics and getting the right mix in each of the 2 reception classes.

They say that it won't make any difference as they open the doors between the classes in the afternoon and they all play in the same playground. But I know from my experience (son in yr 2) that he quickly got really attached to his class and he doesn't mix all that much with the other class.

But on the plus side my daughter must know over 60% of the new reception intake so I'm hopeful at least some of her special friends will be in her class.
