We've got a burglar alarm on our house, but have never had it working.
It may or may not be functional.
Anyone know anyone who could come and have a look at it for us and see if it's salvageable or not - without charging an arm and a leg?
Many thanks.

Burglar alarms are much cheaper than the cost of fitting and running them, Hugh.
To replace them, people often specify new kit throughout, because the EU Standards that the police rely on change from time to time and if you don't install to those standards, you cannot get the police to turn out.
However, most households do not require a hotline to the cops - the alarm goes off (nowadays it can send you a text) and they can call the police themselves. That means that you can usually hang on to the existing wiring and sensors if you wish. Nowadays however, wireless sensors are common and thus easy and cheap to fit.
I have some experience of this world - put the make and model number here and anything else you want to disclose (and what you want to achieve and if you want to get involved yourself) I'll tell you how much the old one is worth if I can, and give you my pennyworth of advice.
Please bear in mind (as you probably know) that small local firms need to make a profit to stay in business to give you the local service you quite rightly value. Being smaller they can be very good at reducing costs larger firms cannot avoid on some aspects of their service but it leaves them vulnerable to appearing to overcharge for others - you're sometimes paying extra for the local service and that's often buried in the quote.
