Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We've been uploading election material, adding links and filming videos, all to try and put us all in the position where we can cast a more informed vote in the local elections on May 6th. If you're like me, however, things are probably only a little clearer.

So, I have it in my mind that there are two main tasks left:

1. To pull together everything we have on each party from all sources and try and make a citizens' version of what we think each party has been telling us. Volunteers for this task welcome.

2. The candidates have had their say. I'm not sure the residents have had theirs. I had been keen to organise a local hustings, but unfortunately it looks like it won't be possible this time. That doesn't mean we can't ask questions.

What I propose is that we gather together some questions here on this thread and then we'll put those to the candidates online - I've a couple ideas on the format for doing that, but let's see what interest people have in getting answers to their own questions first.

So, who's going to be first?

As the questions are asked, I'll move them up to the top here so we can easily see a list developing (I hope!).

Please note we're GATHERING questions only a this stage. No responses wanted yet and no discussion please.

With the low voter turnout suggesting disengagement between the community and local politicians, what practical measures will you take if elected, to ensure you are aware of the issues which are of importance to local people?
You are one of a baker's dozen of candidates seeking my vote to represent Harringay from May 6th 2010. If you are one of the ten we don't elect this year, how do you intend to stay engaged with all the Harringay issues you say are of such importance to you between now and May 2014 ?
A question for candidates with children or plan to have children, do you have confidence in your local schools and will you be endorsing that by using the local nurseries, play groups, primary schools and secondary schools? *

*I do understand there are no actual secondary schools within Harringay (town not ward)

Some officials have said that "Harringay" only refers to the ward. Other people feel that Harringay refers to the neighbourhood including Green Lanes (N8 & N4) and the residential streets to either side. There is also a view that getting agreement on the notion of the neighbourhood of Harringay and its rough boundaries is a critical issue to encouraging a sense of belonging and so supporting the development of our neighbourhood. Which view do you take and what area does Harringay describe for you?
