Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Another rubbish collection query
Does anyone know whether the next collection will be for rubbish or just recycling, as I think we are now in the fortnightly collection routine? It will be vile for them, and for their neighbours, if it gets left for two more weeks.
Also strikes me that it might not be obvious to everyone or anyone in that house why their rubbish was missed - I think in some areas you get a leaflet saying why your stuf wasn't collected but I don't think that happens in Haringey.

If it was next to me, I'd call Veolia and get it cleared. You can book a free mattress collection as well. I'm sure if you're firm you can arrange to get both done or call the street enforcement team (number via our One Button Council).

The new scheme starts next Thursday, 21st June 2012. This collection will be recycling and food waste collection only - the next residual waste collection will be Thursday 28th June.

Ok, so I emailed Veola about this. Their response:
"Thank you for your email received on 18th June 2012. The refuse
collection is now fortnightly and is next due on Friday 29th June 2012.
I have arranged for the mattress to be collected on Tuesday 26th June
2012."
Not that impressed really. My response follows, will let you know how I get on.
"Thanks for your reply. I'm aware of when the next collection is - that is why I was asking for it to be collected earlier. The bins were overflowing on the day the bin men didn't empty them and I don't think it is acceptable to let them get worse and worse over the next two weeks.
Perhaps this would be a good point to visit the property and make sure they understand how the new system works, in the same way you visited anyone who wanted a smaller bin?
I do realise that the residents were at fault here (one of them at any rate), but this property is a good example of many of the homes in Harringay and it would be a shame for the new approach to rubbish collection to fail so quickly and so visibly. "

I have walked round Harringay ward today and the amount of "residual" rubbish bins that are overflowing is staggering. The message just hasn't got through. I am really trying to hold back from saying "I told you so"! There are another 7 days before "residual" rubbish is collected. Lets hope there isn't a sudden heatwave otherwise we really will be in trouble! None of this is helped by the fact that some of the collections haven't happened as scheduled.

Karen, I have been out on several Ladder roads early this morning and spoken to some people. Apart from the odd ones overall the bins were fine. I think it is high time that you stop trying to find out what does not work or goes wrong but begin to support the efforts. We've never said it would be easy. I strongly believe that we must do our utmost to leave a better future for our children. On another note, Harringay residents will certainly appreciate that the people you've commissioned to survey them on this matter do show basic decency and declare from the outset that they do the survey on behalf of Liberal democrats.

Engagement Officers?
it has been worry for some time that we have developed an "enfocement culture" that cultivates the notion that change happens by enforcement. There has to be consensus and co operation for things to work, no amount of enforcement will ever work and may be counter productive as it allows people to get away with things when they are not enforced. Matters no longer become ones of personal integrity and responsibility but rather action becomes increasingly determined by whether one is going to get away with it!
Egagement officers seems like a step in the right direction.
An example of a missed opportunity.
The Local Autthority has always done an excellent job with recycling and up until a few years ago would collect used Christmas trees from outside homes after the christmas period. One year this stopped. residents, unaware of this placed their used Christmas trees outside their properties so that they could be collected more easily> The following day notices were placed on the trees full of rebuke and blame threatening action over dumped rubbish. What a missed opportunity! instead a polite notice could have been posted through each door thanking the occupant for their wish to contribute to recycling, explaining that the service has been discontinued requesting their continued support with recycling and perhaps wishing them a happy new year.
There will always be people who try to get away with things and to some extent we need enforcement, however when this becomes the dominant strategy it is counter productive. It also brings the Borough into disripute and people are disinclined to respect to its officers. The threats and disrespect shown to Teachers Housing Officers Social Workers and others is connected to the esteem to which the local Authority is held. Too much enforcement and not enablement will cause the Local Authoruity to be seen in a poor light. so Engagement officers sounds good, could we have this for other sevices?
what would it look like if we had Parking enablement officers? Where they are expected to help with safe parking etc.
