Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

...and the prize for ''worst electrical recycler' goes to Royaume-Uni....

As if I need telling, but a study reported over on the BBC website has found that British people are the worst in Europe when it comes to recycling electrical equipment.

TV weekly

It appears that the UK produces enough electrical waste to fill Wembley Stadium six times over and we, in Harringay, see many, many items that could be recycled and parts reused just dumped in the street and sometimes smashed up by people.

Sunday morning, coming down (the road)

There are plenty of alternatives and we are trying to bring all the information together in the Harringayonline wiki (a rather slow developing labour of love I have to admit, this page still has masses more information to add to it) and alert people to ways of finding out where to go to get rid of their electrical waste.
Haringey Council will remove quite a lot of it for free and works with a number of social enterprises to recycle and reuse all manner of things.

Yet the council don't seem to making a very good job of making people aware of the options. It seems from this report they are not the only one...

I think the council is partly barking up the wrong tree. There's only so much they can do in making people aware of the options.

If they have something to dispose of, responsible folk will actively seek out this information anyway,.

There's willfullness about much of the dumping that you describe and no amount of awareness of options is going to change that.

But punishing dumpers might. Making examples of the worst offenders might change behaviour. But it needs to be action that is concerted, consistent and with political will behind it. It has to be done sooner or later. The will to enforce parking rules is there because that's worth millions of pounds per annum to the council. Enforcement of anti-litter would involve much more work than at present and generate far less cash than CPZs & parking fines.

The council needs to take this matter seriously and devote effort to preventing dumping in the first place instead of devoting attention to picking up the pieces after the act.
