Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

If anyone is in any doubt as to why this man wanted to be a councillor, this is a letter he sent to St Ann's Labour Party members asking for support for his selection as a candidate:

St Ann’s Branch Labour Party

Dear Members,

Thank you for short listing me in St Ann's ward.

I would relish the opportunity to represent you and the residents of St Ann's in Haringey council.

I have been living in Haringey for 12 years and running a pharmacy on Green Lanes serving the community for the last 7 years.

I am very familiar with issues facing St Ann’s ward residents and residents in Haringey as a whole.

I’m fully engaged with the business community in Haringey and campaigned and promoted issues on their behalf.

As an example, I managed to petition for the reduction of business rates as well as the cost of rubbish collection.

I successfully campaigned which led to the reduction of the cost of rubbish collection from £7000 to £3000 from once a week to twice a week, more than half the price reduction.

I know very well the issues facing small businesses in the borough and on Green Lanes and I am best placed to help meet those needs.

As a healthcare professional I am aware of issues people in Haringey are facing, such as bad housing conditions i.e. lack of affordable housing, overcrowding which affect people’s health.

We will need to address these issues by building more social and affordable housing.

If selected as your councillor I will work hard with my fellow ward councillors to tackle issues in the ward such as anti-social behaviour, housing, health and work to support the businesses on green lanes.

I will also work as part of the labour administration to make sure we continue to deliver policies that benefit all residents across the borough.

I will campaign hard to ensure we keep St Ann's ward labour and deliver labour wards across the borough.

I am a hard worker and will hold regular surgeries and campaign hard to ensure the needs of residents of St Ann's are well represented on Haringey council.

I look forward to meeting you and hopefully being selected as your representative.

Kind Regards,

Ali Gul Ozbek

Enviroment? Anti social behaviour? Crime? Potholes? Red routes? Street lighting? Services? Dumping? Closure of St Anns Hospital? Laurels Medical Centre? Targeted transport for the elderly and disabled? CCTV for areas with serious problems in the Ward? Rogue landlords? Rogue Estate Agents? Itinerants and undocumented workforce obstructing Wickes? Where is the meat in all this? And further, he states he would "relish the opportunity to  represent us.."

I don't think it's fair to talk about what has been left out, he's tried to do a one pager. I think the issue is what he's decided to put in.

Green Lanes is NOT a red route because of the local shopkeepers. It is the only major arterial route out of London that is not a red route. Whether this is good or bad I have no idea but it is a reflection of how much power the local shopkeepers already wield.

Has anyone in the Labour Party in Haringey read the Ragged Trousered Philanthopists in the last twenty years? No, I thought not.

John- its perfectly fair as he has not demonstrated with this letter that he knows the Ward. He has made a short list of what he is going to do and must expect observations both now and if he becomes a councillor in the ward I live in.  I also note he does not address other problems which you have highlighted. He opened the door, not me.

Fair enough. Seeing as you live there, do you know where he lives seeing as he says he lives in the ward?

John, I honestly do not have a clue where he lives and this demonstrates your concerns. He is the man from nowhere and for all we know he fell off the mothership. I have very real concerns.

According to companies house, he lives near Sainsbury's (address edited by site admin). I will download the land registry entry tomorrow. He is adirector of med-chem and st Ann's meadow.

Google Street Map shows this to be a residential road, all houses and flats. Can't read the nameplates on the doorbells from that magnification.

This is not where he lives necessarily, it is where his company office is. St Ann's Meadow is registered around the corner in the same development.

I ask AGAIN! Has anyone in the Haringey Labour Party read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in the last 20 years?

St Ann's Meadow has nine directors and you will effectively be putting THEM on the council too. It is a property investment vehicle.

So, by 'reducing the cost of rubbish collections' he actually means 'reducing the rubbish collections'? ;) A bit like me reducing my grocery bill by buying half as much food, then...sounds like the perfect politician

clearly he thinks the electorate is quite dumb, to think we will all forget how he was 'selected' and that this particular strategy is clever.

I thought he said that he campaigned successfully to not only reduce the cost, but also increase the frequency "from once a week to twice a week". Maybe I'm reading that wrong though.

I don't know him personally, but I visit his pharmacy quite a lot and if he is the guy I think he is my wife and I have found him to be quite friendly and very helpful.

In any case, I'm not sure he is so deserving of these quite personal attacks.

He seeks to represent us on the council as a politician. I am questioning what happened after fellow businessmen and indeed staff were registered at business addresses on Green Lanes with the Labour Party, I assume to gain selection in the safe Labour ward of St Ann's. I think this is important and that it is fully deserving of my questioning.

I am sure he is a very successful businessman and very friendly to customers in his shop.
