Role Title:

History Tours Volunteer

Role Summary:

We are looking for a team of enthusiastic volunteers to assist with the preparation and delivery of pre-booked guided tours.

Organisation

Alexandra Palace is a Grade II listed north London landmark built in 1873 as a leisure facility on a grand scale. During the First World War the Park and Palace were used to house Belgian refugees and enemy aliens before becoming the home of the BBC between 1935 and 1981.


Alexandra Palace is setting out long term regeneration plans which both promote its heritage and widen public access to the most historically significant areas of the Park and Palace.

Outline of tasks:

Main Duties:-


 


Front of House customer service (Register visitors for tours and monitor group size)


 


Answer questions about the history of the Palace and Park and hand out factsheets


 


Lead guided tours (script and training will be provided)


 


Escort tours groups


 


Encourage tour groups to complete evaluation forms


 


Cash handling


 


Take photographs of the event for our website

Undertake additional tasks as requested by the Learning Officer

When:

Quarterly dates to be confirmed, advance notice will be given to all volunteers

Commitment:

A commitment of 1 training day or 2 ½ days of training and to be available to volunteer for a suggested minimum of  2 days of tours per year.

Reports to:

Volunteer Co-ordinator/Learning Officer

Skills, Qualifications and  Personal Qualities Required (Essential):

  • Experience of interacting with the general public

  • Good communications skills & a good level of spoken English

  • Interest in learning more about the history of Park and Palace

  • Willingness to follow procedures

  • Friendly and approachable

  • Reliable with good time-keeping skills

  • Happy to work independently or as part of a team

Skills, Qualifications and Personal Qualities Required (Desirable):

  • Ability to share information and knowledge to fellow volunteers and visitors without being asked

  • Enjoy working with the public and children

  • Demonstrate a commitment to deliver excellent customer service – training will be provided.

Standards of behaviour:

  • Polite, courteous and attentive to all visitors

  • Respectful and supportive to fellow volunteers and staff

  • To make oneself aware of forthcoming events and changes to procedures

How will you be helping us:

This volunteer role will enable us to improve the service we provide to the general public whilst providing a high quality customer service and information to enhance their experience.

Notes:

  • Applicants are considered on their merits and regarded equally

  • You will need to complete an application form

  • We screen all volunteers which as a minimum means taking up one reference from people who have known you for two years and are not related

  • For appropriate roles we will also apply for a Disclosure Barring Service check.

  • Volunteers will be inducted and trained to carry out the role

  • Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust will cover travel expenses to a maximum daily limit of a zone 1-6 travel card

 


This role description is intended as an outline indicator of general areas of activity and will be amended in light of the changing needs of Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust.  It is expected that the volunteer will be flexible, using this document as a framework.

I agree but it is common to use vols for these roles, we come across retired people with lots of local knowledge in national trust houses, places of historical interest all over the country, kenwood house for example.

It should not be the norm, no, especially now.
