Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
A scam or not a scam? That is the question.
I live in a top floor flat on Green Lanes. Recently we found a photocopy note on the doormat from, purportedly, The National Grid. It said we must immediately get in touch for an important check on our meter. Rang the number today and got an ansaphone saying to leave my name and number. I didn't.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Anyone else get this?
Any ideas?

Bizarre. Sounds like a scam to me. I don't think the national grid would want to know anything about your meter. Am not an expert by any means but the grid is the power transmission network (okay, I looked up Wikipedia) while the meters are owned by individual power companies.

If you passed it to the police would they follow it up? Someone needs to do a bit of low-level detecting via entrapping.

Actually I don't think this is necessarily a scam. When we moved into our house on the ladder five years ago we got a similar note through the door in relation to our gas meter needing to be changed. I remember thinking it looked a bit amatuerish but turned out to be quite geniune. We also (from memory) had to leave a name and number in order to get a response. I think as long as you ensure that you ask for anyone calling at your house to only call by appointment and show their ID when they call, you are not going to fall foul of any ne-er-do-wells. Good to be cautious though.
