Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For all fans of slightly blurry phone pictures, this is a very, very fine example. Even on full magnification you can't quite make out the artists' names in the bottom right corner.

But I enjoyed seeing the original whilst walking through the back streets of Finsbury Park recently.

I was surprised not to see this already on HoL. Maybe I used the wrong search terms (in which case sorry for wasting your time), or maybe the totalitarian restrictions on our liberties simply mean few others have seen this yet.

For more detail I have found a reference on the internet with a nod to local folklore.

One of the artists is described as working in mosaic which this piece is not. It seems more to me in the tradition of the butcher's shop where the tiles on the wall set out cuts of meat, especially the annotation in the roots of the scientific names.

Credits where they are due. The Elm Tree of Life is a new public art mosaic at Finsbury Park station. Created by artists Carrie ReichardtKaren Francesca and ATM it stands at the entrance to the new station development. The mosaic incorporates stories from the local area and connects the urban environment to it’s more natural past.

Talk of butchers' shops also reminds me of W Plumb on Hornsey Road which is so splendid it deserves a mention even if it is not quite in Harringay

Thanks for drawing our attention to this, Adrian. I’d neither seen nor heard of it. I’ll have to go and take a look (I think it can legitimately come within the scope of a daily lockdown walk).

Spotted this myself yesterday on a bit of a wander; was like you impressed to see it. Also noticed a seven screen picturehouse is opening next door.

W Plumbs...............wonderful !
