Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Since Andy Newman and the team over in the Gardens seem to have cornered the market in small garden awards, I was almost surprised to see the deservedly much lauded Gardens Community Garden absent from the list of winners for The Conservation Foundation’s Green Corners Awards.

What about next year, Harringay? There's an easy challenge for Andy, or, Liz and co, surely your Warham planters will be up to the challenge next year.

The winners' list did include some nearby neighbours:

PAVEMENT GREEN CORNERS
Supported by the Guerrilla Gardeners’ Pimp Your Pavement 279 Alexandra Park Road, Haringey

ON THE MOVE
Neighbours of Alexandra Park Road, Haringey

SCHOOL GREEN CORNERS
Bowes School, Southgate

So, congratulations to them.

Hmmm, it's a thought isn't it?
Hugh -
Firstly well done to all those who do enter the London Green Corners.

We did enter the London Green Corners Awards back in 2009 and won an award - it was good but suits more on the lines of what Liz and the street garden teams are up to rather than Community Gardens. As you know it all takes a lot of time & effort to firstly keep it all going as well as entering such competitions i.e. entering- being visited and interviewed. - Don’t forget the Community Garden is not just a garden space we are a community space with events to fundraise manage and organise as well. - My new discription of the garden is " A Community Garden without a Roof"

For the Gardens Community Garden we have narrowed the competitions down to what seems to suit us best in the area of Community Garden Spaces to;
;
The renamed "Green Flag Community Award"
This is a national high standard of "Open Green Spaces" run by Communities. (Similar to the Blue Flag for Beaches?
&
The RHS "It's Your Neighbourhood Award - London In Bloom - this has 5 levels of Standard - and as you have mentioned before - we have won twice in a row the highest of all being "Outstanding" - we have this inspection next week for the 2011 awards?

Plus you gotta let others have a chance Hugh come on ?

I recall Green Corners losing their sponsorship in 2010 so the compition was all very short notice to enter- To be honest I didn't know it was back up and running again. I know they had developed an all season entry rather than a deadline entry - which works if your space has for instance a fantastic Spring or Summer display?

Liz you should enter the Ladder raised beds, they are perfect for such a competition - by entering also makes realise how many interesting spaces there are. Through such competitions also you can discover what other people are doing out their to improve their street - so such compitions can give you design idea's, Its all fantastic - bringing pleasure for all and ownership to residents.

It’s all great stuff

Andy
Thanks for the info and tips Andy and keep up the great work.
I meant " A Community Centre without a Roof" by the way?
Andy
Yes, I had a look and it doesn't seem too demanding to enter. Apparently all seasonal winners go forward to a grand final eventually.
