Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A while ago I noticed what appeared to be a newish but unopened sweet shop between 'But First Coffee' and the Stroud Green Library. It wasn't clear whether it was actually going to be a sweet shop or just an example of some unique interior decorating. Does anyone know?

John's Off-Licence used to occupy that space, but it closed 10-15 years ago.

That ground floor space is now a flat, and the 'Ye Old Sweet Shoppe' sign, the shelves, backboard and sweet jars disguise a no-natural-light bedroom I think. The jars are labelled 'Festering Fruit salad', 'Bilious Blocks' and the like.

If you want to see a genuine shop-front restoration the dry cleaners at the other end of that set of shops is worth a look. It was once a grocers I think, 'Stevens Steeds' and the old name has now been regilded above the shop front, which has the original (or very good copy) polychrome tiles. 'Stevens Steeds' is also painted faintly on the side of the row of buildings and can just about be made out by looking up from Harringay station. More here.

I believe that the planning consent for the conversion stipulated that the shopfront had to remain.

That also seems to be the case for the extensively reworked building directly opposite - in that case the shopfront glass has been obscured.

In comparison, a couple of fronts in the nearby run of shops on Wightman Road by the pedestrian crossing have been filled in - very clumsily.

We have just been reading The Giraffe, the Pelly & Me, which was the first time I had ever encountered the word 'grubber'. And now here it is in the wild. Thanks :)

Hi

I understood it is recently converted to residential, but Planning insisted on retaining the appearance of a shop.

Phil

Can you explain what this expression means?

Slang for a sweet shop, as e-aisles indicates and Osbawn knew (though I didn't know it, thank you both).
