Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

While getting some photos off my camera, I came across some of a demo that took place about 2 weeks ago at the end of Turnpike Lane/Wightman Road.

The demo appeared to be in defence of the Alevi Cultural Centre in Clarendon Road? Anyone able to enlighten me further on the this demo? Click on photos to view larger

It might connected more to problems Alevis are having in Turkey (and other places in the Middle East including Syria) at the moment, rather an a Haringey specific issue.

Some Sunni Muslims consider Alevis not to be proper Muslims. They want official recognition for their religion by the Turkish government which would give them various funding and tax advantages as other religions in Turkey have.

It was also the anniversary of the Sivas massacre this month in which over 30 Alevis were killed in an arson attack for which, I believe, no one has ever been convicted.

Thanks for that explanation.

The majority of the signs were not in English so it was hard to know what the demo was about (and I was at a bit of a distance, waiting for a bus). I knew someone might be able to enlighten me.
