What would Haringey and Enfield be like with less traffic, better housing options and less air pollution? These are some of the questions the Green Party is asking, and inviting local artists to help them answer, with potential grand prizes of £1000, £500 and £250!
Across London, the Greens have adopted six policies that, if implemented, could make London a better place to live. Whether that involves climate change, a much needed re-evaluation of income disparity or a reduction in air pollution, they have identified these six areas as important issues for London. The challenge the Greens are setting for local artists is to create art that depicts, embodies, or expresses what it could be like in Enfield and Haringey if one or more of the questions below were to be answered in the positive.
Traffic: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if there was less traffic and more bicycle routes?
Housing: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if rents were affordable for local people?
Incomes: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if poor people weren’t so poor and rich people weren’t so rich?
Air Pollution: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if the air was cleaner?
Climate Change: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if more of our energy came from renewable sources and there were fewer diesel and petrol vehicles on the road?
Policing: What would it be like in Haringey and Enfield if the police worked more closely with the community in setting local priorities and more community police officers were recruited locally?
The competition is an initiative of the Enfield and Haringey Green Parties with assistance from Collage Arts in mounting and hosting the exhibition. It is designed to use the arts to create an awareness of how the local environment might be changed to improve people’s lives and to celebrate the huge number of artists working in Enfield and Haringey. Local artists who live or work in the Boroughs of Enfield and Haringey stand to win as much as £1000 if they win the competition and there is a special prize of £250 for the best submission by an artist aged under 25. All entries in the competition will be featured in a six-week exhibition at the Chocolate Factory in Wood Green from the 13th of April to the 20th of May 2016.
