Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

........although that should probably read something like "Tweet captchas from HoL's Twitter"..........but do feel free to put me right on that!

Anyway, since only a few people from the site use Twitter, I thought from time to time, I'd add some bits and pieces the HoL Twitter page is picking up from other people it's connecteted to on Twitter (Tweets from people we're following), who are usually HoL members, I think! (You can't always tell).

Do feel free to add any Tweets you see that you think might interest/amuse folks.

Starters for 10:

I still don't get this twitter business. What is the advantage over texting or emailing or the new instant messaging feature? Is it that when you email someone who is on twitter they will recieve it as a text at the same time? I've read the twitter pages but i still dont get it, i'm a bit thick with new technology..
Think of Twitter as micro-blogging. So you can update all the people who want to be updated by you with one message. For some Twerps (Twitterese for people on Twitter - awful isn't it) that means hundreds of people. Similarly your Twitter stream can accept updates from as many people as you choose in one stream. Your Twitter page is also open for anyone else to read - so much more open.

You can also use it like an instant messaging system.

I'm probably not the bets person to explain. Try these two articles:

Have to say it's not intergrated into my life yet. I think if you're connected to lots of Twerps, it probably has it's place, if not..........well the jury's out.
I think when you could get SMS messages from the site, it was much more 'useful' for getting updates, although if you follow a lot of people your mobile is tweeting like that annoying bird outside your window at dawn when you have a hangover.
That is now a paying service in the UK and not worth the effort really (maybe that's an over 35 thing to say). You can add it to your blog like a headline, or a FaceBook Status and people can opt to receive updates about your blog/sad life/project/cat.

So saying I've just been putting random comments up not related to blog matters and have attracted 3 new 'followers' (all anti-litter/environment types,) so maybe there's a lot of people out there who enjoy a double entendre.

I was sniffy about FaceBook at first and then found how useful it was to connect regularly to people like my family in the States and old mates who've moved away, I discovered RSS feeds and now wonder how I managed to negotiate the net without them, I didn't see the value of social networks like this until I joined it and , baby, look at me now...so in time I'm sure I'll get the hang of Twitter. I've always been a bit of a twerp so I should fit right in really!
I see, so you can send a message (online?) that goes to many people at the same time?
And appears on their screen if they so happen to be on their computers? And/or it goes to their mobiles at the same time too as a text? (but not anymore?)

So if you're a twitter, when you log on you get like a moving sign accross the screen saying John is making a cup of tea etc.

sorry, i know its painful -
Not really. People have to check their page to find out what is going on.
If you go to your own home page on Twitter, you'll find the personal updates from all the people you are following who have posted (140 character) messages.
If you follow a website you get updates on what is posted on the forum and a link to it.
You post a message and everyone who has elected to follow you will get it on their personal web page. In this country getting a text message means paying. you can also post a message to your own page via text.
My latest tweet says "MrsEds has discovered that pressing random buttons can result in some unfortunate consequences".
The 'fun' is expressing something complex with so few words. It might just be me that finds that 'fun'
But you can add gadgets to your desk-top to do pretty much what Ruth describes. I think if you're a Twerp who lives by your Twitter Tweets, you'd tend to do that.
Yes, that's true. There are tons of them (http://twitter.com/downloads) but the easiest way is to make yourself an igoogle desktop and add a gadget to that. Then it can be accessed from any computer.
Here's anoter article, Ruth, on using Twitter in the education context.
Not a snippet but here's a list of some 'celebs' on Twitter. Lots of excitement over Britters on Twitter but the discerning twitterati follows Stephen Fry it seems. Of course, there's always Wesley Crusher from Star Trek if that's your bag.
I fondly imagine that I tweet at James Naughtie on the Today twitter page, I like to think, he's reading about me doing the macarena in the living room with my 5 year old.
The @atheistbus is on Twitter, many good tweets. Liked this one showing the endless inventiveness of a football crowd

@atheistbusDriving past Emirates Stadium - "God probably doesn't exist but Arsene Wenger does" is the new chant apparently
