Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So wanna know how much Haringey makes from its banner/lampost advertising?

Following the earlier discussion, I got an amazingly quick response to my Freedom of information request with two pieces of info:

Total annual income for 2007-08 for Haringey Borough as a whole & also for Harringay & St Ann's wards combined.

Would you like to know the figures?

First you have to guess..........

here is a petition set up by a Crouch End resident against this ghastly visual pollution:

Petition set up by a Crouch End resident:

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/ban-the-banners.html

Description/History:

In 2005 Haringey Council introduced advertising banners attached to lampposts. There are currently 130 placed around the borough. They are visually intrusive and add to the corporate graffiti littering our high streets. They are at variance with the Edwardian heritage which Haringey Council asserts it wishes to promote. But all is not lost. The head of the council George Meehan states:

“The council has power of veto over what can be advertised using these banners and will approve or reject advertisements as appropriate. We do not consider the current banners to be offensive, and we are currently planning a corporate policy for advertising we do and do not accept. We will consider your comments when setting this policy.”

So the council’s ear is open to the comments of the borough’s residents. Make your feelings known to the council by insisting that the lamppost advertising be withdrawn. Given that “The positions of banners are chosen to ensure that they have the highest visibility and impact for advertisers” (Cllr Meehan) we can expect many more of these to litter the borough unless the council is made aware of the strength of feeling against them.

Petition:
We, the undersigned, call upon Haringey Council to withdraw the council controlled lamppost banners as we find them visually intrusive, garish and at variance with Haringey's Edwardian heritage.
