Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

When we first moved into our house, we found a Kelly's post office directory from 1935 in the attic which I unearthed again today. It lists all the addresses in the then Hornsey borough and who was the head of household.

Our house was occupied by Arthur Jackson for instance. What is also fascinating is that there was a synagogue on Wightman Road (the current church opposite the mosque) and a lot of residents with German or jewish names living on the ladder (remember, this was 1935).

The unfortunate resident of 26 Priory Gardens N6 was one Mrs Hitler, who I'm sure changed her name by 1939.

If you want to know who lived in your house or anyother address in 1935, just let me know.

The whole of 86 was occupied by Mrs Huber in 1935.  The Evans and Perry families lived at 88 and 90 even then, as did Miss RL Sharp at 84, so would have been there right through the war.  The cinema was The Premier Electric Cinema, manager Mr A Bainbridge.

So you know the house or what? I was 3 when we moved in (bombed out in Streatham in 44) so by the time I was aware the cinema was the Regal.

My parents, Alfred and Anne Walker, lived at 20 Albany Road N4 as far as I know from their marriage on Christmas Day Dec 25 1935 but I never knew if they lived there beforehand. Would be very gratefull if you could see if this address is listed and if so who was listed there.

The occupant in 1935 was Mrs Alice Clark.  I imagine the Kelly’s directory would have been compiled either late 1934 or early 1935.

Many thanks Michael, for taking time to look up for me and reply.

Hi Michael can you access any date or is it just 35. I am interested in Alfred Walter Simmonds . He started renting in 57 Beresford Rd in about 1937/38. Congratulations by the way on this post, I think you've started something.

It’s only the 1935 edition I have Andrew

My Aunt LIl was bombed out in Fairfax. I dont know the number but her name was Lillian Howes. She had just been widowed. Her husband Terry was wounded on Crete and the hospital ship he was bound for Athens in was bombed by the Luftwaffe and he was killed.

Hello Michael,
Fascinating stuff! I wonder if it covers 66 Finsbury Road N22 - the building was originally a shop and I've been told it was once a post office. Would you also please check 20 Victoria Road N4 and 4 Upper Tollington Park N4? I believe my late dad's family may have been resident at the second address in the mid-30s. Many thanks.

Finsbury Avenue is outside the area I’m afraid.
20 Victoria Road was occupied by John B Hamilton and 4 Upper Tollington Park by Mrs Green.

Thanks Michael, much appreciated.

To avoid sidetracking this thread, Hugh's reply to Maria's query about 66 Finsbury Road has been moved to another thread to which his response referred
