Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

When we first moved into our house, we found a Kelly's post office directory from 1935 in the attic which I unearthed again today. It lists all the addresses in the then Hornsey borough and who was the head of household.

Our house was occupied by Arthur Jackson for instance. What is also fascinating is that there was a synagogue on Wightman Road (the current church opposite the mosque) and a lot of residents with German or jewish names living on the ladder (remember, this was 1935).

The unfortunate resident of 26 Priory Gardens N6 was one Mrs Hitler, who I'm sure changed her name by 1939.

If you want to know who lived in your house or anyother address in 1935, just let me know.

This is all so useful. Kathleen was my grandmother. No idea who Herbert was so either they didn't live there then or they didn't own the shop. The map & photo - brilliant as now I know where the shop was. Such a shame everything's gone. Thank you so much. xx

No, Herbert wasn't living there in '39: he's not on the 1939 Register. I assume that he was a former owner whose name might have been retained if he'd built up a lot of local goodwill, or as you suggest your family might have rented the shop or run it for Southgate. Do you know how long they were there?

PS: Jane, coincidentally, as you posted I was just finishing a piece about a pub on the Wood Green Estate, of which Commerce Road was part. The pub was at the end of Nightingale Road, just one turning up from Commerce Road - so pretty local to your family's shop.

My dad used to brag he grew up in a sweet shop so they would've been there much of his childhood. I remember him mentioning Nightingale Road and the library which I don't think he ever quite got over it being demolished. I don't remember a lot else really. xx

Would love to hear any memories you have

Sorry, Jane. Forgot to post a link to the new article.

Thank you. It's a fascinating article. x

Hello Michael,  is there any data for 201 Wightman?

The listing jumps 201 so it was either vacant then or the occupants wished to remain anonymous

Thanks Michael, is there a chance that the house was listed as "Abbotsford" which was its address before the street was numbered?

Named houses and buildings are listed in the order they appear in the street so Abbotsford would have appeared between 199 and 203.

Fascinated to see this thread and I read through to check if anyone had previously asked. I no longer live in Harringay but could you please look up who lived at:

66 Raleigh Road

and

37 Sydney Road

please Micheal?
