Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Don't get me wrong - I love all the kebab shops, and antipilar cafe does good mezze - but wouldn't it be really great to have either a lovely, french patisserie like the one in newington green over here, or a nice, slightly upmarket chain like a giraffe cafe? i really feel like there is somewhere missing on green lanes - you have to go to crouch end, stokey or newington green for any lazy sunday brunches, or mid week treats for yummy mummies, or someone nice and relaxing to meet your friends. i want to collect enough support to show one of the managers of these sorts of places that there is the demand for it on green lanes. does anyone out there feel the same way as me? i moved to the area 8 months ago from highbury and miss the cafes most of all!

too many cafe's but apparently never too many betting shops eh? ha ha.
I agree wholeheartedly but would prefer it not be anything as corporate as Giraffe.
Are people after a community centre - a place to meet and associate (Like Jackson's Lane community centre) - or just better shops/cafes? If the former, then shouldn't the council be funding something along these lines? It would of course have to be a fully inclusive community centre that promotes...oh I hate to use this term, "bridging social capital" (cross-cultural links and common ground). Or more of us could use the existing 'Turkish' establishments, build a relationship with the staff/owners/managers and make gentle suggestions. I just wonder whether the subtext for this thread is about having a place where a certain kind of person (said euphemistically) feels more comfortable.
No, certainly not my text or subtext - though I think my contribution may have introduced a certain amount of confusion into what was really a cafe-led thread.
I'm with you Jo. Altho it's good that a lot of our shops are local businesses, people should always have choice. If those who think is so terribly Crouch End to want Giraffe or whatever, remember how terribly Primrose Hill it is to not want Starbucks or multi nationals. You might choose not to eat there, but your friend or relative who visits might want to.
I want a decent DVD store and not a postal one. Call me old fashioned, but I want to stroll down my high street and choose one off the shelves. Blockbusters, whatever.....
I also liked Liz's perspective with Marylebone High St.....
dvd shops in most areas seem to haev closed down, not just harringay. its a national thing, i think.
Yes, the guy in Maxood (sp?) used to rent them but told me his business had almost fallen away because they are so cheap to buy now, people don't bother to rent.
I may be wrong, but, given that today's Hornsey Journal is reporting that 10 percent of Crouch Ends shopping units are empty, if a trendy chain was looking for a new North London outlet, it is unlikely that they would be looking here when there are units there. On the other hand the rise in commercial rents, 70,000 to rent near the Clocktower, that are driving out businesses could result in them looking for alternatives, somewhere less expensive.

Crouch End are asking for things like rate holidays for new businesses and an active project by local traders to promote local shopping. Now these seem like excellent ideas and I can't see where they couldn't be used here. The GLSG and the local traders group should be looking to work to promote what we already have which by are own admission we are more than happy with and advise them how to be more customer/woman/family/ whatever friendly and attractive to potential customers e.g.keeping shop fronts clean and tidy, controlling waste, preserving architectural detail, shop layout, even things like a local loyalty card such has been tried in places like Lamb's Conduit street (which was having the opposite problem of being swamped with chains).
Business is business and it would be an odd business that does not want to increase its customer base. The way lies surely in shaping what we have and helping local businesses to be more successful and more importantly USING them once they have made the effort. All of the places, Crouch End, Stoke Newington etc have worked hard to help themselves none of them started off like that, it is time Green Lanes does the same and shapes its own identity.
That's a great point, Liz, very well made. Even persuading some of the local shops apart from tesco to stock organic milk would be a way of making the shops which already exist cater more to the perhaps changing needs of the area. i will give la ruche a go, and see what else is on offer in the street. it's always great to find a hidden gem...
Glad to hear that, I hope you all give a go.
Where is La Ruche please??
Next to Lido's Hardware store, near Pemberton Road. It has lots of celebration cakes in thewindow.
