Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Can you recommend some trips out to the country (or somewhere picturesque) using public transport?
We have two small children and no car. Has anyone got any ideas for trips out to picturesque spots using public transport?
We have been up to Trent Country Park on the Piccadilly Line and to Kew Gardens, Walthamstow Marshes etc and Hampstead Heath on the train, but do you know of any other top spots to take the little 'uns this summer?

Much easier now, forget the crowded Vic line, Change at Highbury to Platform 7, to Clapham Jct, every 30 minutes direct, or change same platform at Willesden Jct. Hampton Court train every 30 minutes from Clapham Jct, and it is just within Travelcard Zone 6.

I've opened a Wiki page on this topic to gather all the very useful information that people contributed to this discussion together. I've written up Optique's info on Tilbury Fort, as well as Hatfield house and Paradise Park so far, but feel free to edit the page with your own ideas.
It is open for editing if you want to add information about a good day out using public
transport. Please avoid recommending places that need a car to reach and try to give as much transport info as possible at the end of your recommendation. I've also tried to put things on alphabetical order, unless someone has a better idea for ordering the suggestions.
It is really very easy to get started, just click 'edit page' and write your suggestion. No special knowledge required, (even adding links is very straight forward but don't worry about that, I'm happy to help you do it if you have probs)

I reckon it's time to resurrect this really useful thread.

Oooh, don't remind me about the original wiki. We lost it when the company that provided the service fell out with ning although I have a feeling that we got the pages back (Hugh?)
We have a new wiki now but I haven't got round to starting a section for this kind of thing yet.

A couple of other suggestions - I went to the Markfield Steam Museum (Markfield Park, Tottenham) after seeing it recommended on this site and it was fantastic. As well as the museum, the park is also great, cafe is great and it's by the river.
The other day we had a 'big day out' to the Thames Barrier - it takes a while to get there via overground, underground, DLR and bus from Wooliwch Arsenal - but that's part of the fun and, once there, there's a small cafe and information centre (£3.50 for adults) plus great industrial river views! Then we walked 2 miles along the river to the Dome, passing an ecology park which would also be worth a look, time permitting, and then home on the tube.
Also got the tube the other day to Cockfosters - exciting for a child who has never been the end of a tube line before - and walked to the Museum of Domestic Architecture based on the Middlesex University Campus. Very small, very quiet and very sweet. Free.
Maze in Trafalgar Square also amusing though not time-consuming.

I've been there. Lovely little museum with a big stack of gold bars in the middle. Not a whole day out but worth a trip if you're in the area.

There are nice walks from Bayford station in Herts (half hour on direct train from Harringay station), through ancient woodland & other countryside.

You might want to check out London Open House weekend (18+19 September) for interesting/unusual buildings, many which are only available this weekend.http://open-city.org.uk/index.html
I ordered guide booklet (£6.50) and it was delivered next day listing laces by borough. Also available free at libraries

Coram's Fields, Guilford Street, nearest tube Russell Square. It has a small city farm, play area and an Austrian cafe tucked away at the back. The Charles Dickens Museum is nearby as is The Foundling Museum (you could also squeeze in some shopping in Brunswick Square). Forgot to mention the British Museum is nearby too - oops.
Freightliners Farm, Sheringham Road, nearest tube Caledonian Road. Another city farm with a cafe. Just around the corner is Paradise Park which has a water play feature so don't forget to bring a towel!
