Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been out of town all day and just got back to receive a call from Ian Sygrave of the LCSP about the Metrobet Gambling licence application (corner of Warham Road).

Sadly the magistrates found in their favour. Apparently it was a long afternoon of deliberation and the beaks haven't had time to write up their judgement giving the reasons for the decision. It will be forthcoming very soon.

I imagine that the Council could appeal, but I'm not at all sure whether they'll go that far.

Of course this makes it all the more likely that Better will also get their licence.

What happened? Hard to say. Gobsmackingly crass legislation must shoulder the lion's share of the blame, but for my money I think Haringey's counsel did a decidedly mediocre job. I think he focussed on the wrong things, failed to press home advantages and omitted important evidence.

Ah well, we'll see if we can get the Council to appeal, but otherwise I'm afraid that's it. Game over. We'll just have to get along with our new neighbours I suppose.

Oh joy, a betting shop at the end of my road and if I don't like that one I can cross the road and visit the one opposite my road. I wonder if the secretary of state for culture, media and sport would like that at the bottom of his road. Think I'll write and ask him and maybe ask David Lammy how pleased he is to see it at the end of his road... and... thank you to the campaigners for trying so hard. I will still buy you a pint but it will be to drown our sorrows.
That is so gutting. As you say, rubbish legislation is mainly to blame. The fact that this probably makes it easier for Better (rather than harder) is just insane.

As Liz says, many thanks to everyone who worked so hard on this.

All this has reminded me that I never did get a response from David Lammy to a letter I sent ages ago about this. Genuinely interested in his views, given that the whole thing stems from Labour policy ..
His chap is on this site, Philip Glanville. Maybe you should give him a 'poke' and see if he can rescue your letter from the bottom of the intray. You'd think Mr Lammy would have a view given it is his patch that is being so badly affected.
Yeh, tried that a few weeks ago (no response yet!). Will keep you posted.
Boo to the magistrates. What a pants ruling. I hope the Council has the sense to appeal (depending on whether they have any grounds to do so, of course). I guess the gaming shops wont be happy until there is at least one establishment between each ladder road, given the rate at which they're setting up home around here.
Does anyone have any idea how many people these establishments tend to employ?
Only 2 or 3
I play cricket with a couple of guys who work for William Hill. I think I mentioned this before but they are paid a bounty of £5K if they find a site that is turned into YAWH. I think betterbet and metrobet may be more aggressive in this as their business model appears to be
  • Build up a portfolio of high street real estate raking in good money
  • Sell it to someone for a lot more than it cost to build up
  • Retire
Hugh - Really only two or three? I thought it would be at least 7 or 8. But I bow to your superior knowledge.

John - Your statement seems to be pejorative and dyslogistic.
Ha ha ha, I am almost totally approving of that kind of business model. I have also been paid in the past by my employer for finding a new colleague so I'm OK with that too.
That's my understanding B. When we met with the union who represents the betting shop workers they told us that one of their big fights is against SINGLE manning. So I'm probably giving them the benefit of the doubt saying 2 or 3. But I'm not an expert, just basing my response on my recent learning. Happy, as always, to be corrected.
Here's a mad idea: Can we go all French on them, and do a big protest march up Green Lanes, plackards and all, hopefully get national media involved and really make a massive, loud noise? Anyone? We should NOT take this lying down, it's about time someone listened to us, and we need to make them. Hah! I'm up for it if you guys are!
