Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This from Haringey Council's website, Tuesday 4 March 2008:

A Green Lanes nailbar owner was this week fined £500 and ordered to pay full costs of £559.90 for operating without a licence. The owner was also ordered to pay a £15 surcharge.

On 25 February Haringey Magistrates Court ruled that Nhat Truong Vu who runs Unisex Nail Design of 411A Green Lanes N4, was guilty of breaching section 14 of the London Local Authorities Act because he was operating without a licence.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:

"We are keen to check that only licensed establishments offer these kind of services. It is a matter of protecting the public from the risk of infection or from being exposed to dangerous chemicals and substances. Unlicensed premises are therefore considered a potential risk to health and are dealt with strongly."

The Licensing Officers within Haringey's enforcement service cover a number of miscellaneous licensing matters including checking premises that offer 'special treatments'. These include nail bars, ear piercing services, sunbed salons and similar body and cosmetic treatments. The risk here is that poorly managed and operated premises may cause infections or skin conditions through poor hygiene or lack of knowledge in respect of the chemicals and substances used.

Vu had refused to supply relevant information and documents to obtain a Special Treatment Licence even after several visits and letters had been sent to him.
