I noticed Threshers on Green Lanes has shut. AARGHHHHH! Does anyone know why? They always has such great offers, and a brilliant selection as well as staff with great knowledge. Great shame.
I knew not drinking in January was a mistake. Could this be my fault??

You can actually buy real ale in at least one offie on the Lanes - the Lion King on the corner of Seymour Road has a reasonable collection, hidden away in the left hand corner. At least, they did when I went in before Christmas.

Don't blame yourself Anette. Chatted to a bloke taking the stock away and it's because Threshers are in trouble. It seems despite the governments diatribes, none of us are drinking enough...of the good stuff anyway.
Could we put in a deputation to the Lion King requesting our favourite brands? :) Bit of an IPA drinker myself.
*sniff*. Okay. Will stop blaming myself. ;)
Such a shame! I'm a wine drinker, and the wine in the Lion King is sometimes a bit vinegary (on display in full sunshine is not good), and I believe the lovely people working there are muslim, so would probably not have the great wine knowledge the Threshers staff had. It's hard to know what's good alcohol when you don't drink it yourself, I think. And the 3 for 2 offers were great. But the Lion King do have some good stuff, the staff are lovely, and I am sure they'll order stock on request. Worth a try!
Now I have to go to Sainsburys, and with the current traffic it'll take hours! But that's a
completely different discussion...
Could we request an Oddbins or something? If we aske nicely? I'd hate it if that shop now becomes another pound shop, kebab place or - EEK - a betting shop! Let's keep an eye out for any notices going up, folks.
They did have reasonable stock and one of my favourite bottle ales, Marstons Fire Stoker from Burton, Staffordshire. They use to sell four bottles for a fiver which is really cheap in bottled ale terms.
I have only ever gone to Lion King for cheap Bar BQ lager and the like. They do sell a wide range of European beers but not too my taste unfortunately.
Lets hope for a good replacement although my moneys on a Internet 'Cafe'.
There's got to be a market for a good wine / beer / ale shop on Green Lanes! Surely there's a lot of us who likes a good quality drink, and not just cheap Eastern European lager - tins of which litter the streets (yep, old bag strikes again, can't help myself!).
We're already full to the rafters with:
Betting shops
Pound shops
Kebab shops
Turkish bakers
Social clubs
Fruit and veg shops
I'd vote for Oddbins!! (though my brother works for them so I'm biased).
Am also gutted about Threshers closing. I did wonder whether the final death knell might have been the new Tescos.. I wait with interest to see what shop we get instead.
