"Ladder Residents Happy with Traffic on the Ladder" - It's Official!

Some while back I wrote to a number of the councillors about traffic on the Ladder. The usual deafening silence from Mr "Traffic" Hayley was pleasantly contrasted with interest from Karen Alexander.

She has just mailed me with the response her enquiries received from the Haringey Council department responsible for traffic. Karen reported the following:

They appreciate that a review of the Ladder Roads scheme may be wanted by residents in certain roads who are experiencing greater volumes of traffic than other roads. They say it is inevitably that in a scheme of this nature some roads will experience higher volumes of traffic than other Ladder roads, due to their location within the ladder road system. They add that taking into account the level of correspondence they have received from residents of the whole area since the implementation of the scheme, they do not believe that a review is warranted and that most residents are satisfied with its operation.

Karen added:

If local consensus is that people want to see the scheme reviewed then of course I will continue to press the council to reconsider.

I know the consensus round my gaffe. How about everybody else?

The council don't want to listen to residents.

The recent petition against relaxing new CPZs on the Ladder was larger than the councils own consultation responses.

It seems rather bizarre that the council wants to charge residents vehicles based on emissions and yet actively encourages traffic to the area by relaxing CPZs in the evening and on Sundays. Hardly consistent policy.
Was there a petition? I'd would sign this!

It does seem odd to remove the restrictions when parking is most problematic (evenings and weekends). I wonder if the debacle with cars at the Arena at weekends is making them think twice about encouraging more cars here.
1. The parking is most problematic when the CPZ scheme does not operate. Not... the CPZ should operate on the days when parking is most problematic.
2. There are too many cars being driven through where we live. Nothing can be done about this by the council. I think the best we could do is ask them to enforce the current rules about heavy goods vehicles and speed.
3. The increased level of cars being driven TO where we live is unacceptable and the time to object is now. A year of no action means that we are "happy" with it.

We need to keep our goals achievable. What do we want the council to do about this? What do we think they can do about this?
I see the signs have gone up regarding the new 'relaxed' CPZ. It will be 'interesting' to experience the impact.

what were the points you raised exactly with the council regarding traffic? i have written lots of times about treaffic (although not recently) because for raleigh road the one way thing and traffic hump thing doesn't work. I'm afraid i got ground down by it all and decided to move instead but i'm still here so, wearily, i am right behind you. what can we do though?

I am but one of many who've raised this issue, but the last email I can find on the issue asked for an area-wide traffic review to manage traffic in the area more sensibly. The LCSP got agreement to this some years ago. At the time the Council thought it would cost £10,000. Apparently they subsequently withdrew the offer giving the reason that the cost was in fact closer to £100,000. Who knows.

But the main point is that we know and they know that Ladder traffic has got much worse since the closure of Hermitage Road and the Gardens. Those changes were taken without thinking through the consequences. All eastbound traffic now funnels through the Ladder. What I asked is that they now fund an independent review to look at the best solution for the whole area.

This has not gone away Anna. Hold your fire for now.
to be honest i think that the traffic planners planned it that way - otherwise the main roads would be even more gridlocked than they are. They do have some skills i think, and any intelligent lay person could have foreseen increases in traffic, let alone paid professionals. It is in their interest to retain the current situation.

although looking at the mess around the arena shopping mall, maybe i'm wrong.
