Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Tony Armstrong of Locality puts forward the case on the Local Government Chronicle that the answer for cash-strapped councils is not to shut, sell off or leave derelict local social infrastructure such as swimming pools, youth centres and green spaces but to back transferring assets to the community.

As he says, councils are the custodians of these places not the owners. That's us. The public. And once those community places are sold off or left to rot, they're gone for good.

"... these assets do not belong to local authorities to sell off in the first place. They are the custodians, but we the public are the owners."

True in spirit, unfortunately wrong in law. The council legally own the title deeds. For instance years ago as soon as it became known Hornsey Town Hall was going to be flogged off a local charity was set up to offer to take it over. The then council (disgracefully) simply refused to engage with them.

Fortunately Ally pally is one exception - it is legally owned by the people.
