Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

TODAY is 22 April 2026.

Some know this as Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970.

There does exist a little evidence that Haringey Council has at least heard of Earth Day.

However, the local authority does not celebrate it. It's not seen as cultural. Nonetheless, the council did once manage to mark the anniversary in the way that only Haringey Council could.

On this day—four years ago—bosses at the swaggering Events Team ordered park-staff to tear out nearly 200 sapling trees. The saplings had been planted by volunteers around the Richard Hope Play Space.

200 new trees ripped out from park …‘because they were in wrong place’

The High Court has held that the council holds (not owns) Finsbury Park in trust for the public.

However, their proprietorial Events Team controls Finsbury Park. And they are succeeding in steadily adapting our public park to the requirements of their paying customers for ticketed Events. Three days after the orders of council nature-thugs had been carried out, Hisky0 posted this on HoL:

200 new trees to ripped-out from Finsbury Park!

Some may maintain that it was only coincidence that the council did this on Earth Day. But that Events Team bosses should order this on Earth Day, of all days, somehow seems fitting.

The display of control and power was bad enough. But then to add insult to injury, council employees then put out the false claim—via council PR—that the thuggery had nothing to do with council Events. This was untrue.

Unfortunately Labour's Major Events Policy has led to a loss of honesty and integrity in several aspects of the control of Finsbury Park.
