Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As some of you may recall, 11 Burgoyne Road is the notorious illegal conversion which hit headlines in the local press earlier this year when the owner was hit with a paltry fine for turning this property into 11 (yes, ELEVEN) bed-sits. Details here.

So I was a bit surprised to see that a "Sophia Lambrou" (presumably the wife of the notorious Paul who was fined) has applied for a Certificate of Lawfulness for the conversion of the property to 2 flats. Details here. These people are just desperate - anything to string out the delay of having to do any work and to keep the rent coming in for as long as possible. I was even more surprised when I looked at the application on the Haringey web site and none of the papers had been put up. So I contacted them and below is the response I got (thankfully). I also asked them about the application for a COL at 66 Wightman Road (in the same list) which was made by "Michael Michael", the other guilty party who got fined for 11 Burgoyne. So the response below deals with both.

Dear Sir

Further to our telephone conversation and further discussions with the planning officer allocated to the site, I am writing to confirm that these 2 planning applications are in the process of being returned to the applicant / agent as they are subject to Planning Enforcement Notices and cannot apply for a Certificate of Lawfulness.

The applications are in the process of being withdrawn from the website.

Thank you

Kind Regards

It's almost like they have huge egos and can't bear to lose. Why not just pocket the fat profits and go somewhere where the neighbours are less vigilant...
Really, John? Is that a solution ? For the hutch-landlords to accept that it's: "hands-off-the-Ladder, guys'. And quietly move to other less vigilant (and vocal) areas?

Right now, this evening and for weeks before, tenants crammed into what was a single family house in another of Mr Michael's firm's properties - but in Tottenham Hale ward - are currently making their neighbours' lives a misery.

This problem of overcrowding and the degeneration of less expensive areas is likely to get steadily worse as housing benefit changes force the clearance of poorer families from central London.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor.)
As usual I was being facetious (and posting in the dead of night).
Good for you Alan. I live in Seven Sisters and work as an ESOL teacher in Tottenham. I am appalled by the conditions in which some of my students live. Some of the landlords are unscrupulous, exploitative and ruthless. We certainly don't want more plying their trade here. Most of the people in my neighbourhood would be terrified at the idea of writing a formal letter of complaint.
On a slightly side topic I had the council knock on my door (I live on Mattison) asking about the occupancy of our house and our neighbours due to the increase of illegal bedsits on the ladder and they were trying to crack down on it.
That's likley related to this current discussion Lizzie.
This is getting off topic, Bushy was posting about 2 specific addresses. What can we do to get these sort of things dealt with PROPERLY? I know shooting the resposible parties is illegal, which is a real shame, it seems like the only way to stop them for good...
