Wassailing is an English tradition to wish the Apple Trees a bountiful harvest in the coming year. It’s also an excuse for a bit of fun! In the Hub and the Orchard in Lordship Rec.
2 – 3 pm
Lantern making, face painting, wreath weaving for children at the Hub.
3 – 3.45 pm
Procession led by musicians to The Orchard. Children bring pots and pans to scare away evil spirits from the Orchard! Gathering around the Wassail Tree. Singing led by Tottenham Community Choir.
All raise a toast (mulled cider or non-alcoholic hot sorrel) to the Apple Trees; children decorate them with fertility symbols (bread/sliced fruit). Collection in aid of the Haringey Migrants Centre. Please bring cash.
3.45 - 5pm
Warm up with hot drinks and home-made apple bakes, music, poetry, story telling and singing from Hackney Choir, music and mingling.
5pm CLOSE
All are welcome. It’s FREE, though there will be a collection in aid of a local charity, and donations will be welcome towards cost of the food and drink. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
IMPORTANT
Please come dressed for the weather and note that the ground may be very wet and slippery underfoot. Be especially careful to wear warm and waterproof footwear.
